It starts before he wakes up, really.
Bob snoozes his alarm twice and skips his usual Saturday morning run. He downs a couple of ibuprofen, keeps his breakfast light, and prays that plenty of water will spare him from the oncoming migraine. Then, he misses two calls from grandma, and he picks up on the third. It's just this side of nonsensical, some drama with her ranch foreman, that Bob can't decide if it's simply a side affect of her advancing age or if it's something more worrisome. So once he's calmed her down, he calls mom. He isn't sure what he expects her to do all the way in Florida, for her mother-in-law no less, but he feels better at least.
By the afternoon, his head's a constant dull ache. Opening and closing his text thread with Nat at least a dozen times as the day wears on, he wonders if she'll accept his migraine as a valid reason to skip out on the barbeque. Ultimately, he doesn't say anything - unprompted, Nat reminds him that he promised to be a designated driver so Bob resigns himself to his fate and responds with a thumbs up emoji.
He picks up Nat, manages a minimal amount of small talk when they first get to Penny's, and then Bob finds a spot to sit that's shaded and mostly out of the way of everyone. Which, unfortunately, doesn't include Hangman.
At first, Jake does most of the talking, bragging really, and Bob is mostly fine with the occasional nod and hum of acknowledgement. He can grin and bear it. But Jake isn't just satisfied with hearing the sound of his own voice, he keeps trying to draw Bob out - literally, he keeps suggesting that Bob get up to dance with everyone.
"Hangman!" Bob interrupts, swallowing hard after he's spoken, his voice too loud. "Unless you want me to puke on your shoes, fuck the hell off. Please!"
