Padstow: Wine, Wine, Fish, Wine, Wine
Imagine a brisk afternoon in Padstow, Cornwall. It is a beautiful, quaint seaside town with narrow, windy roads and cobble stoned streets. The boats rock back and forth in the calm harbour and plenty of middle class tourists wander aimlessly.
Having spent 2 nights sleeping a campervan; the new Spaceships VW Caddy; I was ready for a slight touch of class and a glass or 2 of wine. As if to juxtapose the daylight hours, spent trooping around the hills of Marazion, the evening was luxurious.
Beginning at a quaint little wine bar named binTwo, I chose a Pouilly Fuissé 2012 (Collovray & Terrier, France) that was smooth and rich followed by a glass of Billecart-Salmon champagne. Whilst the price tag of the champagne begs a better review, the wine was the winner here.
The wine bar is a lovely little place for a pre-drink. The staff were lovely too! Get in early as there is limited seating inside if the gentle sea breeze becomes too much.
Continuing the flow of fine wine at Rick Stein's St Petroc's Bistro, a bottle from La Grande Reserve (Muscadet Sevre-et-Maine Sur Lie, Domaine Gadais Peter et Fils). A fine choice with a fine price tag but nothing could beat the first Pouilly this evening.
Starting the gustation with a sharing board that hit the spot quite nicely, yet I would not consider this any better than a simple antipasto plate put together in by a gourmet cook at home.
For the main course, the dover sole with a side of broccoli & parmesan (hold the cheese, please). The combination of lemon, butter, herbs; ratio wise was great, but I'm afraid that the fish itself was less warm than expected and a small portion for the price.
All in all, I would recommend this restaurant. The couples holding hands and grinning at each other (presumably after a glass or two of wine) make for a loving, warm atmosphere. We very much enjoyed the service, the staff were genuine and accommodated my request to avoid the sardines and cheese fritters on the sharing board.
P.S. Wine friends, call off the search. If you'd like to purchase the Pouilly Fuissé 2012 (Collovray & Terrier, France).
