#PleinAirpril Day 19/30 “Zion National Park, Utah” gouache on paper 4”x6” National Park Week is April 17-25, so I will be featuring some of the majesty of this country’s National Parks. For the third day of National Park Week, I painted Zion National Park. I had the great fortune of visiting this park as a young kid with my neighborhood friends on a road trip, and wading through the blue waters between the canyons in my water shoes, looking up at the red rock looming above me, and the strange almost impossible lushness of this park next to the desert areas has never left me. It may very well have started my love for these parks in the first place. Located in southwestern Utah, it is best known for it’s rust-red 15 mile-long Zion Canyon, but most impressively in my book, it encompasses desert, river, woodland, and coniferous forest landscapes all within its bounds. In doing so, it is home to a broad spectrum of fauna, including golden eagles (one of over 289 bird species), nineteen species of bats, desert bighorn sheep, Merriam’s kangaroo rats, and ringtail cats. This is the nineteenth painting of an intensive thirty day painting challenge hosted by the @warriorpainters.
