#PleinAirpril 13/30 (Theme: Earth) “Tennessee River” gouache on paper, 4”x6” This is the thirteenth painting of the @warriorpainters’ month-long PleinAirpril Challenge (30 paintings in 30 days). I’m working off of the theme “earth,” and we finally got a break in our storms out here in Tennessee, so I took a walk down to a nearby river and set up shop with my handmade pochade box, and did some painting. It was a beautiful day, and several birds and a squirrel kept me company while I worked. It felt good to finally put my pochade box to work again, especially after how long I spent working on it. Pochade boxes, for those who don’t know, are painting boxes that hold your supplies and act as an easel in the field. While all pochade boxes are different, I built mine out of an old cigar box, and added embedded magnets for palettes, and a ribbon for lifting materials. Plein air painting seems so much more challenging to me than painting in the studio (perhaps because there’s so much going on), and I am looking forward to doing more work outside.
