I called out a guy in class for NOT knowing a stereotype.
We were talking about a study where people assessed a 9 year old girl in an academic setting. Across the conditions, people rated her as scoring low in math, despite the ambiguous evidence (with high scores in liberal arts and reading). When that was brought up, this guy literally said “so I don’t really know, but I think the stereotype is that...girls are bad at math?”
I immediately laughed and said “you know the stereotype” (like, basically quit playing, quit trying to act like you don’t know, when we all know)
and he says “Well my mom is a mathematician.” (supposed end to the conversation, like he was dropping a punchline to a joke)
Without skipping a beat, I both laughed and reiterated he knew the stereotype, because everyone knows the stereotype. He did an “okaaay” and ignored me.
Being a brown woman, his statement sounded a bit too much like “I’m not like the rest of the guys/I can’t be sexist because...” and was especially annoying because it also sounded like “oh I don’t see race.”
So it’s not that he didn’t know the stereotype, but he refused to acknowledge that he knew it. I refuse to believe that a 20 something ANYONE has never heard that girls are bad at math. In any shape, form, or fashion. Even women who are amazing at math know that stereotype (especially them!)
