“Right-o!” Will slapped his hands together. This really were a right show and a half. He couldn’t tell what were coming, and what was really going on, but hoo-hum. They’d make do. All they could do was keep on trucking. That didn’t mean he couldn’t have a small break. Willie had taken just enough bacca from the field, dried it with some assistance from a corralled water-lad, and was now packing it into his pipe. All he had was his pinky to gently press it down but that would do just nicely. He weren’t prissy ‘bout these things after all. Didn’t have one of them fancy light-things, but there was never fire all that far away. Felt good, felt right, Willie held the pipe between his teeth, as he hauled up the next bucket of mud mixed with dung.
Somehow he’d lost all of his little helpers. “Bugger everyone gone.” Will wheeled around, either everyone had scampered off whilst he’d had his back turned, or they’d been long gone. Willie gestured for one of the farmhands, a lady, but she looked hard, and bricky. “Need a spare hand, you’s free duck? Can’t be doing this alone! All them lots buggered right off.”
