TOKiMONSTA - Strange Froot (feat. Ambré)
It’s been more than vindicating, watching TOKiMONSTA’s star rise as we followed along with the producer’s career after falling for her earliest songs, before this blog even existed. The hip hop and electronica producer from Los Angeles has more than proven her mettle over the years with her diverse range of sound, her exceptional collaborations, and her live performance wizardry. And we were floored when we found out about the health issues that TOKiMONSTA had to battle and overcome. Her perseverance has been inspirational, and her 2017 Grammy nomination for Lune Rouge was more than deserved. TOKiMONSTA now returns with her first song since that record, a lo-fi slice of dreamy languorous R&B named Strange Froot, featuring New Orleans singer songwriter Ambré, who was previously featured on Lune Rouge, too. It’s a song that reminds me of the mellow intoxication of early single Darkest (Dim), whose accompanying video oh so many years ago was TOKiMONSTA’s first visual release, crowdfunded by zealous fans like myself. In a way, we’ve gone full circle. Strange Froot boasts an easy breeze and gentle acoustics. It evokes warm summer nights, cozy cafes lit by dim streetlamps, aimless wanderings through cobblestone lanes, and wistful evenings when your mind is overcome by thoughts of someone you miss. Strange Froot will be on forthcoming release Young Art Sound II, which was commissioned and curated by Young Art label-head TOKiMONSTA. It arrives on May 3rd, with cuts from the likes of Soul Clap, Holly, Rosehardt, TOKiMONSTA herself, and more. Stream/download Strange Froot, here.
Wish I could stay sober,
I only get high to get over you
TOKiMONSTA makes sweet, sweet chill with Grammy-winning soul singer Ambré on the gorgeous ‘Strange Froot,’ giving you the kind of hazy, midnight lounge vibe that proves seductive, each note falling like a beautiful sigh as Ambré’s angelic tones sweep across an ethereal bed of lightly-plucked guitar, wistful violin and warm, soothing bass.
‘Strange Froot’ is from the forthcoming compilation album Young Art Sound II, out May 3 via TOKiMONSTA’s label, Young Art. Read the review for her previous album Lune Rouge here.
