“Oh Belle. Here, let me take her,” Adam said, taking the screaming baby from the arms of his wife. He moved the baby to one arm, bouncing her as his other arm embraced Belle.

He ran his fingers through the length of Belle’s hair, attempting to soothe her. “I think you both need a nap.”

Adam couldn’t help but think of how many nights Belle had spent awake since the baby had come. He should have done more to prevent this from happening.

“We can leave you know,” Adam whispered, his lips hidden behind her wave of brown hair. “We don’t have to stay at this silly event just because we were scheduled to be here.”

He glanced down at his hand entwined with hers, even months later savoring the sight of his mother’s ring on her hand, glinting in the light.

“I will even take the fall for it if necessary. So as to shield you from any ridicule,” he teased. Both of them knew that in the eyes of the public Belle was never likely to face ridicule.
