❝ Tell me about it, ❞ she says with a chuckle, reaching for his hand and gently guiding him into her and Evie's room. ❝ I have never seen Audrey so high-strung. I told her that everything doesn't have to be perfect, but she quickly told me otherwise, ❞ Mal laughed, closing the door behind them before walking back to him.
❝ I can't wait to call you my husband, ❞ she says, leaning on her toes to plant a soft kiss on his lips.
"This is the first royal wedding Auradon has ever had, everyone is going to go crazy about it." Ben had known that when he finally got married it was going to be a big occasion. The entire country had been waiting for this day. When the crown prince, now king, got married. It was going to be just as big, if not bigger than his coronation.
"I can't wait to hear you call me your husband every day. And I'm pretty sure I'll never get over calling you my wife, even 50 years from now."
Mal paused at his word choice. Adorable? Since when did any part of her scream that word? Her whole motif was dragons, and not in the cute How to Train your Dragon way. "It's naive of you to assume that her mother would allow any purchase for me." Come on, Ben, even you had to know who the sheriff answered to. The Mayor knew exactly who she was.
"We also both know that when Evie wants to do something she's going to do. it" Ben replied, hoping that they could easily just move on from the fact that he called her adorable. The stubbornness of their shared friend might be his saving grace in the moment. "Just don't close yourself off to the idea."
@auradonsxking liked for a short starter !
❝ Hey, Bennyboo, ❞ Mal says sweetly as she opens her door, gazing lovingly up into Ben's eyes. ❝ Can you believe our wedding is finally almost here? ❞
"Almost feels like it wouldn't ever happen." Ben replied with a soft smile. "I will admit that I will not miss wedding planning at all, if I never have to look at center pieces again I will be happy."

"There's a way to fix this." Or at least he hoped there was. He knew that he was still new, still learning who he was. It didn't stop him from making mistakes, the problem was that he didn't know how to come back from it. "I just have to find the right way to approach it."
Mal shrugged. "I'm sure she would." How she became friends with the mayor's daughter, of all people, was beyond her. The sheriff was in the woman's pocket, so she has probably heard all about the trouble-making teen in purple hair. "I'd probably have to pickpocket like... half... the town to afford a dress she likes, though." Her foster parents are definitely wealthy enough to afford anything in any store, but they would never give her any money to get a dress. They would probably ground her if they knew she wanted to go to a dance purely so she couldn't go.
"It's kind of adorable that you think Evie would let you pay for it at all." It wasn't pity, it was Evie's love language. A way to show the people in her life that she appreciated them. And for a moment he found himself pausing on the word, almost regretting that he called her adorable. Not that it was a lie, but he didn't want to scare her off. He knew that he liked her, but he didn't know what he would do if she didn't like him back. They were good as friends, she had saved him when someone went after him to get at his father. And had been there ever since. "Just consider it, you might actually have a good time."
Mal scoffed slightly. "You mean, go to a dance for a school I've missed like... sixty percent of my classes in? Yeah... I'm pretty sure they're not gonna let me in the door." That was a bit excessive, but she wasn't wrong about how many classes she's missed. Getting arrested instead of going to school was one of the easiest ways to make sure she ate in a day. It made her seem far, far worse of a student than she actually was, but hey, a girl's gotta eat.
"Then go to forty percent of the dance." He teased with a small smile. He knew that he was pushing it, trying to talk Mal into something she didn't want to. Maybe he should admit that he wanted a dance with her, a chance to have that high school moment that everyone else dreamed of. "They'll let you in the door, and if they don't I have a way of charming people into doing what I want. Besides, we both know Evie is dying to pick out a dress for you."

❝ well, you said it. not me. that you don't trust me. ❞ and that wouldn't have stung, not at all, if he hadn't let his guard down. that's the part he now felt stupid for & blues glaring icier than usual. ❝ when i couldn't even trust you. ❞
"I know that's what it sounds like -" And the truth was that Ben had no way to turn it. The words slipped out before he could take them back, realizing that no matter how much he wanted to give his entire heart to everyone and trust them fully, part of him was still like his father. Still hesitant to trust. "But I'm learning. Growing up we were so conditioned to never trust anyone who was different, I guess sometimes the programming just takes over. That's not an excuse, I know."
@inkdreamt
"Look, it's not the worst idea in the world." Ben spoke, knowing that Mal might have a different thought. "We only get to go to a school dance like this once, and I think if you don't go you're going to regret it. Besides, I would be there with you the entire time."

Hello
paintedragcn:
“Fine, you get some credit,” She conceded, her nose scrunching a bit. “But you still gotta be careful. You’ve been spelled far too many times for me to feel comfortable over. You need a permanent solution.”
“Okay, you have my attention.” He knew that Mal had a right to be worried, and he figured he’d work with her to find some sort of solution. “What do you think we could do to prevent that from happening again?”
everwake:
She hummed, satisfied with the answer he gave. Of course he wouldn’t do anything to her. He was too cowardly to take any sort of action against wrongdoings, wasn’t he?
The smile that played on her lips faltered though at the rest of what Ben had to be, and a crease developed between her brows. “Well, she’s gone. Maybe you should’ve tried harder to keep her around, huh?” She traced a finger along the side of Ben’s face, almost caressing it, and then stepped away.
“Auradon won’t be waking up any time soon. Consider your next move carefully.”
Audrey was still in there, Ben believed that. And usually his heart was right. He was right about Mal, he was right about people deserving a second change. And right now he needed more than anything to be right about Audrey. He didn’t know where Mal and the others were, if they were put under the sleeping spell. He didn’t know if they were okay.
All he knew was right now he needed to figure out how to solve this without anyone getting hurt. “What do you want my next move to be?” He asked cautiously, not taking a step forward or moving at all. Instead he kept his focus entirely on her, and tried to keep his mind from wandering.

Tired was a good word for how Ben had been feeling over the past few weeks. While things had been on the up and up, that didn't mean that the council had approved of their decision to lower the barrier. While they were slowly coming to terms with their new normal, Ben was often having to argue his point, and help create more space for the flow of people that were now living in Auradon. Aside from the council fighting him on what felt like every step he took, Ben was in the process of a program to help everyone transition into their new lives.
But no matter what, Ben stood behind what he was doing. And it was moments when he found himself out by the water that he would just let himself relax. He didn't have to watch his words out here, he could just - be a normal person. Which was rare these days. He couldn't stop himself from talking as he stood and looked out over the water, not really sure why he was spilling everything out. But it was like a flood, once it started he couldn't stop.
"I don't need you to beat anyone up for me." Ben started as he held up his hand to try and decline the offer. "You wanna talk?" He asked, before realizing that Harry was offering to be a listening ear to him. "I mean - are you sure you wanna hear my laundry list of stresses?"
ANGSTY QUOTES I FOUND ON PINTEREST REWORDED INTO USABLE CONVERSATION
feel free to reword slightly to fit your muse!
“you do it on purpose, don’t you? you’re silent when people expect you to argue.”
“kinda sad, though, isn’t it? sure, it’s ‘freedom’, but… nobody’s waking you up or waiting for you at night… seems more like loneliness to me.”
“i don’t mind it anymore. it’s not a big deal, i’m just used to it.”
“just don’t, alright? i don’t want you to just pick me apart. you might find nothing you want in here.”
“sorry. i don’t mean to be angry. i am trying to be happy.”
“i don’t want to be useless.”
“i know you’re trying to help, but it’s just making me feel… ruined. i don’t want to need you to be kind to me.”
“look, i’m sorry, but sometimes, i make the wrong choice, alright? sometimes i don’t want to choose ‘healing’. this is what i’m used to, and sometimes it’s just easier to make the wrong choice.”
“i don’t know why you keep looking at me like that.”
“sorry. i’m terrible company tonight. but if it’s gloomy and boring you want…”
“sorry, it’s… not a nice story.”
“there’s nothing i can do to change it.”
“it’s not so complicated. if i deserved it, then i would’ve been given it, wouldn’t i?”
“i must’ve done something which means i didn’t deserve it.”
“your eyes are nice. but… i mean, don’t take this the wrong way, but they’re kind of… sad. you look sad.”
“you’re more important.”
“yeah… i don’t think i was made to be subtle.”
“you weren’t made to be subtle, were you?”
“i wish i wasn’t real, sometimes. you know?”
“i wish i could just… give you the story without it being from my point of view. i want you to know, i just… don’t want to tell it.”
“it’s my own fault.”
“look, love isn’t easy. it hurts, sometimes, and keeps hurting forever.”
“god, i’ve made such a mess…”
“can’t you just let it go?”
“no, i can’t just let it go!”
“being around people is so tiring.”
“why are you so scared to just… care about people?”
“why are you so scared of letting people care about you?”
“c’mon, look at me…”
“i don’t regret loving you, if that’s what you’re worried about.”
“i don’t think you’ll hurt me, it’s not like that. i think you’ll see what other people have done and realise you can’t fix it.”
“it was just a hug… seriously, why are you crying?”
“could you just… could you just hold on a bit longer? thanks.”
“it’s not… no, you don’t have to stop. i’m just not used to it.”
“is it permanent? that ‘kicked puppy’ look you’ve got going on?”
