daughter of dragons—
swain had originally welcomed rose to stay with his clan when she became pregnant with their child, but because their daughter would only be a half-blooded dragon, she knew that the child would feel that they didn’t truly belong. their daughter couldn’t be raised among mortals either, however, because dragons and dragon-kin were hunted for the wealth that their rarity brought ( everything from dragon scales, claws, to their bones were highly prized ). therefore, after sarah was born, rose left swain and his clan to raise their child in a secluded home where she could feel at ease with herself and be safe from those who would hunt her down.
the home sarah was raised in was on a small, secluded island that her mother and swain built during her pregnancy ( the materials being draconic in origin ). her father visited as often as he could, and swain served as her only link to her dragon heritage. she didn’t interact with other humans either though; her mother made once a month trips by boat for supplies with swain bringing them other such necessities when he visited, too ( usually being food or draconic materials ).
while there was an element of loneliness at times, sarah lived in relative peace for many years. she grew to have claws, horns that curved back along her head, wings, and scales on various parts of her body ( primarily her shoulders, the outside of her thighs, back, and along the curves of her cheeks ). because of her mortal blood, though, sarah cannot shift into a true dragon form like her father; she can become more draconic in visage and larger in size, but she does not become a true dragon.
however, when rumor began to spread that rose knew the whereabouts of a dragon clan, she began to recede further into hiding. she traded with merchants further and further away from the island as sarah got older, her age allowing her the luxury to travel for a greater length of time. this worked for roughly five years, until sarah was fifteen and a man broke into their home. the man was a dragon hunter known as gangplank who had caught wind of rose and been tracking her down for those five years until he managed to find the island she and sarah lived on.
gangplank demanded she either reveal the location of the dragon clan or give her daughter to him, or he would kill her. rose refused, and fought with him in an attempt to allow sarah a moment to escape— but as gangplank shot her mother, sarah flew into a rage so violent she lost control of her half-dragon, half-human form, and fought him as a misshapen beast. gangplank shot her three times until sarah fell to her knees in her more mortal attuned body, and lay nearly dying in her pool of blood. gangplank had been viciously wounded and left her die alongside her mother, but not before taking half of one of her horns.
when sarah awoke, she was barely able to walk, and crawled to her mother where she laid around her body for several hours. she had been broken from the entire ordeal; her mother and father were all that she knew, and she had been raised to be wary of all humans. they would kill her or take her as nothing more than an exotic pet, and her scars, missing horn, and dead mother were now proof of that. sarah only stayed on the island for another two days; long enough to remove the bullets from her body and bandage them, and to pack the boat her mother used with only what she could scavenged from their ruined home. when swain returned to the island, he found it in utter ruin. he called out for rose and sarah, increasingly growing more and more distraught, until he found rose’s body and his voice became less of fear and distraught and more raw pain and fury.
swain sent those of his own clan to search for his daughter, but they could only expend two other dragons at most or they would endanger themselves. the horn gangplank took from sarah was highly prized, used as a tool to not only forge weapons deadly to dragons, but to hunt down the clan of her father. two years after rose’s death, swain’s clan was tracked down and slaughtered mercilessly. the only survivors were himself, three or so other dragons, and a single nest of eggs.
in all that time sarah spent alone she became almost feral in nature; her draconic features grew more distinct with her scales thicker, her skin rougher. she spent nearly seven years by herself deep within an old forest after her mother died, only living within a cave or burrow for a month at a time. it isn’t until a scholar by the name of marcus du couteau finds her does she interact with another human for the first time since she fought gangplank. it takes marcus months to gain her trust, and even then sarah only tolerates him. it isn’t until he offers to find her father for her that she agrees to cooperate with him.
after a year, marcus was able to track down swain and the few who remained of his clan. marcus finds the handful of dragons living alongside yordles ( kled, lulu, and tristana primarily ), another group hunted by humans. they had intended to kill him for discovering their home if it had not been for the fact that he brought sarah back to her father. at present, she lives with swain, the last few dragons of his clan, their yordle allies, and marcus.
