Can lighting influence our behavior?

In our own homes, we often choose lighting to match our moods or to induce a certain feeling – we dim the lights to relax on the couch or switch on a fun color for a party. But can things go the other way? Can lighting more profoundly influence and even alter our behavior?

Researchers from Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands are currently working to answer that question by conducting both lab and “real-life” tests. The popular destination called Stratumseind is the center for night life in Eindhoven and has over 50 bars and restaurants. It’s packed every weekend with a mostly 20-something crowd out for a night of drinking and dancing. And while most people are only looking for fun, the potent mix of alcohol and crowded streets can sometimes flare up into aggressive behavior and even criminality.

In 2014, the entire street’s lighting was swapped out with tunable LEDs with the idea that certain color temperatures and lighting intensities could mitigate aggressive behavior. Dr. Antal Haans is the manager of the field research on Stratumseind and explains his work, “The idea of the field study was to better understand if we could change aspects of aggression. Can we change moods or people’s tolerance to frustration? You see typical scenarios such as someone bumps into another person and they drop their glass. How then does that person respond to that frustration?”

Though there are no conclusive results yet, the researchers are currently processing the massive amounts of data already collected and a second field study is in the preparation stages. Dr. Haans says that using light to affect behavior is a complicated idea, one that requires much more study before publishing any definite outcomes, “We have our suspicions. However, what we did learn is that this is a complicated thing – aggression on Stratumseeind. We used lighting not necessarily to de-escalate aggressive acts – that’s hard to do because it’s difficult to detect when behavior will become aggressive – but we wanted to know if we could use light to change the dynamics of the crowd. If you talk to the police, they can sense when the atmosphere is changing and our question is: can we interfere in the atmosphere?”
