zay + riley || cider & square dancing

When Zay had offered to be Riley’s date for the Fall Ball, she’d accepted heartily; going solo might not be as dreadfully lonely as she imagined, but it was surely the better choice attending a town-wide party with a cute boy who could dance. Even if Riley was feeling strange and vulnerable in some of her friendships lately, she could count on Zay to help her have a fun time, and didn’t she owe it to herself to spend one night trying to forget everything that had been going on lately?
The last time she dressed like this had been in Texas--another time full of teenage emotions and confusion--and the reminder helped ground her. She’d gotten through that and this time would be no different. Riley looped her arm through Zay’s as they entered the converted barn where the ball was being held. She was interested in joining the dancing at some point, but her eyes were immediately drawn to the refreshments table where a sign was neatly labeled pointing out the cider-filled punch bowls.
