Strawberry Generation sounds like a fun name for a band, but in reality the name is basically a Chinese (Taiwanese) name for millennials, or ‘snowflakes’ (that was hard to write). 草莓族 refers to young people who are easily “bruised” by life. So Strawberry Generation is fun-sounding, but actually it isn’t. And that’s a perfect metaphor for the music this Providence band…

“Afloat” by Strawberry Generation completely took me by surprise. Mostly because there are so many different styles of pop packed into this release. “Intro” sounds like Badly Drawn Boy, “Afloat” (and many other songs) recall the pop of theCatherines. I’ve been enjoying the new Pia Fraus release and I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the shoegaze feel that is present in many of the songs on this release. Then the last song, “I Know It’s Sad But It Must Be Done” has a fantastic jangle that reminds me of some of my favorite Orange Juice songs.
Strawberry Generation are out of Providence, Rhode Island. This CD is being released by Sunday Records (Chicago).
