100 DAYS OF YURI: Day 71 - Strawberry Marshmallow
Strawberry Marshmallow is a longrunning slice of life comedy manga by Barasui. It was adapted into a television anime series produced by Daume in 2005. Two short OVA series were released in 2007 and 2009.
Nobue Ito is a young woman terrorized continuously and entertained by her younger sister Chika, their energetic neighbor Miu, the timid Matsuri, and Ana, an English girl who forgot how to speak English. The series follows their everyday lives doing cute things, from playing at the Ito household to going out for cake.
Strawberry Marshmallow is incredibly cute and funny. Its phenomenal deadpan presentation of outrageous humor is matched only but its sweetness. It is almost impossible to dislike this adorable series about cute kids doing cute things. Strawberry Marshmallow is Yuri-ish, employing occasional references to the genre and hinting at lesbian inclinations between Miu and Chika.
The series has been serialized by MediaWorks since 2002. Eight volumes have been published in Japanese. The first five volumes were translated into English by TokyoPop, which has since dropped the license.
The original anime series and both OVA runs are licensed by Sentai Filmwork and are available to stream on HIDIVE.
Side fact: Strawberry Marshmallow is the first anime series I ever watched, excluding some titles in childhood seen before I knew what anime was (Pokémon).
