How did I get into this situation?
Everything happened so fast that Fuyumi was still trying to process the knife held up to her neck and the frantic man screaming at an officer. Fuyumi was making her way to work before stopping by a food truck at a nearby park, picking up burritos and fries for her lunch. She didn’t pay much attention to her surroundings until she heard the volume of a commotion rise, coming closer and closer. Within a second, a force knocked her balance and her belongings and lunch scattered across the ground, and the pressure applied to her neck. The woman saw the shine of the knife, the shocked expression of a police lady, and people fleeing. Some bystanders stood a distance away from the scene, recording on their phones to post online and looking around to find something to do about the situation.
She should be panicking too. Scared that she might die. However, she didn’t express such emotions and kept calm as the knife was now touching her skin. Why wasn’t she scared? Most people would cry in these situations, but she couldn’t do it. Has she become numb to fear or was she too shocked to react?
