Love how we gatekeep streaming websites but once they get taken down we crawl out of our holes to complain and reveal how many of us were secretly watching on the same site

Experience 1: subscription to a streaming service. Browsing through their collection. Checking if they have certain shows.

Experience 2: finding out about a certain show. Searching far and wide for an illegal website to have that specific show. Closing 6 pop up ads and enjoying the money you saved

I started watching cartoons/ TV shows illegally on streaming websites online at 12 years old and felt super tough of course. It is normal for me to not have streaming platforms but to know of a bunch of websites. When watching stuff with friends that pay for said platforms they usually show one of two reactions:

The “I don’t care where we watch it though it’s cool you don’t pay” and the “holy shit this is illegal/ against my morals you absolutely can’t do that”

One thing these have in common is that they used to think finding such websites was a hard process of scavenging the web and searching for them by yourself. It didn’t help that my younger self acted like that was the case to feel edgy. In real life you look for website suggestions on reddit or tiktok and that’s it. But people who aren’t chronically online don’t know that, which keeps their idea of little me breaking the law badly alive. Anyways RIP soap2day you were very dear to me in my late childhood🩵

The great folly of sites like YouTube is thinking that "give us money to make the user experience less annoying" is a good business model and that when competing with adblockers that provide the same benefit for free they should aim to simply negate the ability of the free service so their own site remains annoying for non-paying users. Essentially trying to extort users rather than actually sell a desirable product.
