Accra’s street preachers are getting more and more sophisticated, in spite of Covid-19. When i was a kid, people preached on the streets and in buses because they get called by God. They had no microphones and didn’t take money. After while, some started using megaphones, and then they got an offering bowl. Then they got proper microphones and loud speakers, then they introduced playing worship songs to woo their audience. Now they’re beginning to throw in pianists and other musicians. It’s a whole show. Under the guise of spreading the gospel, many of them have found a lucrative revenue stream. Knowing that very few Ghanaians will complain about noise pollution or confront them, they outshout each other from every corner, constantly reminding passersby about how more blessed it is to give than to receive. The Environmental Protection Agency in Ghana has no political will to enforce noise pollution laws because the biggest polluters are religious groups, and they are untouchable.
