- Mesh Produce Bags -
Years ago we bought a set of mesh produce bags, and I’ve since lost all but one of them. We’re pretty good about only using our canvas bags for groceries, so switching out the plastic produce bags should be next on the list.
For these produce bags I used this mosquito netting from Joann’s. This netting acts like a knit fabric in that it has two-way stretch (selvedge-to-selvedge), so I cut the bags out so the the stretch goes along the width (that way when you drop things into the bag it doesn’t stretch out).
I had to use tissue paper as a stablizer to sew this netting while also dialing my tension way down and using a straight-stretch stitch (the one that looks lightning bolt-ish). Even though I could have left the seams raw, I decided to use french seams to keep them encased. It didn’t really add any bulk (or weight), and I feel like it’s more secure with a double seam like that.
These finished produce bags are 14 by 11 inches, and I plan on making a couple a bit bigger (celery, anyone?) and a bit smaller. You can also use these as delicate/lingerie bags for your laundry!
