HC or drabble or whatever you prefer but Strike + food / cuisine pls ily
Strike loves food and loves eating - when isn’t he hungry, right? But Strike isn’t a gourmet or a connoisseur of fine cuisine. The dishes he likes are incredibly British (pie and mash, fish and chips, Yorkshire puddings, I mean who doesn’t like those?) and ingrained in British culture (a nice curry) His lifestyle doesn’t allow for experimenting in the kitchen and cooking so he eats out a lot, gets take-away or buys already made meals (or cans). He isn’t exactly picky as to what finds a way into his mouth; which tends to be sweet things when he snacks (hello, digestives and chocolate bars)
Growing up in Cornwall, he didn’t have to cook because his aunt was taking care of it; growing up in London, was different. Seeing that his mother wasn’t exactly the domestic kind, he and Lucy had to see to it that they were fed. That’s when he started cooking - if you can call what he did cooking. Having never had to do it, he did struggle a bit but his sister had learned a few things from their aunt and the both of them managed well enough.
His years at Oxford were another period of his life where he didn’t have to cook. The college’s meals and his going out were more than enough for him. It’s only when he met Charlotte that he turned back to cooking. Her lack of skills and knowledge in that area demanded that he took care of it, especially after being back from Afghanistan. Once again , cooking was something he had to do because the situation demanded it.
Ironically, as much as he loves food, Strike isn’t a cook and doesn’t really find any pleasure in it. The act itself is a chore, it’s deeply rooted in darker moments of his life. But if he has to, he will cook. It’s important to note that he isn’t a bad cook, he’s just not a skilled one seeking out recipes and new things to try in the kitchen. What he cooks is basic and the comfort food type (some classic British dishes) but he cooks it well.
