he  should  have.        there's  no  doubt  to  that.       five  should  have  taken  out  lila  &*  her  mother  the  second  he  got  the  chance  ;  taken  out  the  whole  damn  division.        might  have  saved  a  lot  of  time  &*  effort  –  put  his  family  less  at  risk.       everything  has  always  been  for  them  –  until  it  hadn't.      until  he  realized  how  futile  all  of  this  had  been.        they'd  never  have  put  in  this  effort  for  him  ;  never  would  have  lifted  a  damn  finger.       he's  spent  decades  trying  to  get  home.      in  the  time  he's  been  stuck  here  with  her  ,  he's  come  to  realize  how  very  little  he's  ever  thought  about  himself.         maybe  that  realization  would  come  with  the  collapse  of  the  universe  ,  but    …    it  seemed  doomed  to  fail  from  the  beginning.      let  him  be  selfish  just  a  little  longer.      at  least  here  ,  she  is  trying  to  keep  him  alive  as  much  as  he  is  her.

                           they told him fourteen months later .      told him about what had happened during their time in the nothingness of the void , how they got out and probably why HE hasn't been around . at first he was thankful because he felt like it was something he could manage now with the help of yelena the others , but as time went on it began to poke at the back of his skull as a dark reminder . it kept poking ──── and poking ─────── and poking . until something finally gave . and just as they said it happened those months earlier , it happened again this time .   

    he had known it went too smooth .      he would have given himself props for starting to control HIM , for standing beside yelena and not letting her take the brunt of his problems , but something was wrong the moment the shroud of shadows slithered and the noise went with it . ❝      who are you ? are we enemies ?      ❞ his heart was in his throat , eyes not so frantically searching her face for any lies , jokes or tricks . HE couldn't have taken her memory like it did his , he refused to believe it .      ❝      ──── y-you know me ,      ❞ with a tentative step , he inched towards her with hands held up waving a figurative white flag . it's easy to be cautious when he knew of her talented origins . ❝      right ? you know me ? it's me , bob .      ❞ though maybe it was for the better that she didn't remember him . he was the one that caused all this .

 a  faint  smirk  curves  the  captains  lips  –  perhaps  the  show  of  amusement  with  her  antics  would  normally  be  frowned  upon  as  disrespect  ,  but  he  is  exhausted.       loosens  his  shoulders  &*  has  him  a  little  delirious  –  more  bold  than  he  might  be  otherwise.        ❛     ya  know  ,  people  sure  wanna  look  out  for  me  more  now  that  i'm  an  asset.    ❜       there's  some  wistfulness  in  his  tone  –  comes  with  a  smile  ,  but  it's  laced  with  bitterness.       only  bucky  worried  before  when  steve  tossed  &*  turned  ,  insomnia  haunting  him  long  before  wartimes.        

bucky  still  worries  –  were  he  not  equally  exhausted  in  their  tent  on  the  outskirts  of  camp  ,  he  would  have  noticed  steve's  absence.      steve's  grateful  bucky  sleeps  now  –  his  own  minds  occupation  tonight  has  been  circling  around  bucky's  stint  at  the  hydra  camp  &*  his  subsequent  silence  about  it.        soldiers  are  taught  to  repeat  their  dog  tag  information  in  the  face  of  torture.      bucky  had  been  whispering  while  the  building  around  him  collapsed.       he's  not  been  the  same  since.     

a  sigh  leaves  him  as  he  looks  away  from  peggy  ,  mind  trailing  back  to  his  festering  worries.        ❛    couldn't  sleep  if  i  wanted  to  ,  agent  carter.      brains  on  the  fritz  tonight  i'm  afraid.   ❜         he  smoothes  his  hands  together  ,  trying  to  create  some  warmth  there  to  spite  the  chill  outside.       ❛    don't  let  me  keep  you.      this  is  nothin'  new.     this  body  just  handles  it  better  –  won't  get  a  cold  from  a  few  nights  up.   ❜

there was a look in his eye as he looked towards her and then a slow arch of his brow as if to recall the moment he would say such a bizzare thing. sounded like something sam, or steve had said to him once or twice. hell maybe a hundred times. damn, where they actually getting into his head after all this time? there was always the part of him that understood natasha and her lack of trust, the same side of him that had been so pulled apart, remade, and toyed with that sometimes his own memories weren't something to trust. there was probably no one in their little entourage that understood her more then bucky did.

"doesn't sound like me." he grunted before he gave a brief, small little near smile as he looked to the red head before him. "sounds like decent advice though, that mean you took it?"

Despite the grim situation, Ann can't help the smile that raises to her lips or the laugh that simmers under the surface as she sees the text message pop up in response to her own answer about her work. Details omitted for security, of course. But the words are funny, not because of the contents themselves, but BECAUSE OF WHAT THEY'VE SURVIVED.

A body body as if they hadn't played death games and seen countless bodies ; as if they hadn't been at The Beach where PERCEIVED BETRAYAL earned a bullet through the brain. Too many bodies by games and human choice alike.

The response feels oddly ordinary considering everything they've been through. Strangely ordinary.

[To: Kuina - Status: SENT - 1:26 p.m.] Yes, a body body. Such matters are not uncommon to come up in my line of work, especially if there is suspected homicide.

Her fingers hover over the keypad after a moment. It was ordinary to her before the Borderlands and even MORE SO AFTER. But not everyone was like that. Did it bother Kuina? She's tough but that doesn't mean there aren't subjects or details one would prefer to be OMITTED. Ann hadn't given any of the details other than saying she was working on a body today for a case, but even so. Maybe it is too close to bringing back memories. It takes her a couple minutes to debate before she sends a follow up message just in case.

Fingers parsed through her sister's hair as the younger lay in Kanae's lap. Nights like these were once common between them; Kanae missed it. The serenity of family. Together, side-by-side. They stood tall as they held their battle stances, but tender moments of peace were now rare. The frown that draped her lips hung heavy. Shinobu was always more of a moonlit creature compared to Kanae's affinity for the sun. Luna moth.

“ Don't say that. ” Her tone was gentle, but the words were stern. Hard was it to hold onto hope when demons were endless and hope wasn't. Doubt was only natural. Kanae's hand held still then, drawing Shinobu's bang behind her ear. “ I want to see you smile when you grow up, and I want to hear you laugh like you did with our family. A Kochou never stops caring, Shinobu. ”
