lmao i find it so funny that dany met belwas and the first thing she knows about him is that he’s killed a fuck ton of ppl in the fighting pits and is good/confident enough that he lets each person cut him once before he kills them. and yet as soon as he insults her bloodriders and her people, dany (14, like 1/3 of his size, after she just almost got assassinated) is like “yeah if you do that again you will be regretting it :)”
AND IT WORKS
ok but until this morning i 100% thought that "locust" was an old timey word for lobster
my first encounter with the word was in asoiaf dany chapters and since english isn't my first language, i didn't bother to search every word i didn't know and just kinda threw it in a big bag with "grrm words" written on it, along with all the horse types and bits of armour
it isn't until today when i was reading a post about the plagues of egypt in the bible that i went "hold on, in english bibles god sent lobsters to destroy the crops and invade the houses but my french bible says "sauterelles" so shouldn't it be grasshoppers?"
lo and behold, a quick dictionary search let me know that locusts are in fact insects and not lobsters which???? you mean to tell me that strong belwas was poisonned by grasshoppers???? puny little insects???? and not cool awesome lobsters???? you mean to tell me my entire vision of daznak's pit is shattered???? thanks holy bible and also grrm

—Mil perdones, Alteza. —El anciano se arrodilló—. Ya está muerta. ¿Os he roto la mano?
Strong Belwas using the power of pro wrestling to humiliate the Hero of Mereen is one of my favorite moments in the series so far. It wasn’t her intention but Belwas knowing how to put on a show for this symbolic fight made sending him even more brilliant than Dany intended
How does it feel to be in Daenerys' council room
And then some fans say that all Dany's secondary characters are boring.
"Magnificence, the people of Meereen have come to celebrate our union. You heard them cheering you. Do not cast away their love." "It was my floppy ears they cheered, not me. Take me from this abbatoir, husband." She could hear the boar snorting, the shouts of the spearmen, the crack of the pitmaster's whip. "Sweet lady, no. Stay only a while longer. For the folly, and one last match. Close your eyes, no one will see. They will be watching Belaquo and Ghogor. This is no time for--" A shadow rippled across his face.
#danyweek2023 day 3 prompt: badass moments - dany taking off her veil and tokar, ready to leave the fighting pits just as drogon finally returns (featuring irri and jhiqui discussing the matches, and belwas being queasy from the locusts). shadow-free version:
People saying Strong Belwas is Illyrio’s spy makes me so sad for some reason (I am referring to both internet tinfoil hat theories and Jorah Mormont). Strong Belwas seems so straightforward and I don’t want him to be another schemer. I want him to be exactly what it says in the tin. It hurts my soul.
I also don’t think it’s likely he’s lying about being in the fighting pits. He’d have to cut himself all over, why make up that story? (When you could make up another one?)
I think it’s true Illyrio can’t be trusted and he doesn’t send anyone without reason. But it seems to me, once Daenerys had the dragons, the plan changed to marrying her to Young Griff. Strong Belwas and “Arstan” were sent to bring her from Qarth to Pentos. Illyrio just needed someone to accompany Barristan, who seems to have come up with the plan to not reveal his name initially himself. So Illyrio may have just grabbed some rando off the street. (He didn’t plan on them turning aside to Astapor.)
That is my hope, at least.
