The seven men find a church to take shelter in. Wade lays the stranger on the pew. He checks for other injuries that he might have missed. While doing so, he learns that the stranger is a woman. He doesn't want to continue examining her without her permission, as he needs to remove her shirt, but he worries about serious injuries that need to be treated, even with the absence of dark spots on her shirt. Miller believes it's fine to wait for the woman to wake up. The seven men wonder what she was doing and how she ended up getting shot.
The men wait an hour for the woman to wake up. She tries to get up, but winces in pain and lies back on the pew.
"Take it easy. You were shot," Wade says. As Jamie looks around, she realizes who found her. "Here, drink," Wade says, as he puts his canteen to her lips. Jamie didn't realize how dry her throat was until now.
Jamie knew the men would have questions. The problem is Jamie knows that in the 1940s, explaining she's from a different dimension would get her sent to an asylum. She was hoping to find these men, though getting shot wasn't part of the plan, and she figured out a convincing story. That still leaves the challenge of using her powers to help without the men noticing.
Jackson, Horvath, Mellish, Miller, Jackson, Reiben, Upham, and Wade learn that the woman's name is Jamie, and that her unit was attacked. She's the only survivor, and she encountered three German soldiers.
"…I tried to take them down, but of course I grabbed a gun with no bullets before running. Hand-to-hand combat didn't go well," Jamie finishes.
"You're lucky they didn't kill you," Miller scolds.
Jamie knew this would be the response she'd get, and struggles to continue with her story, and not lash out about how experienced she actually is.
"They would have if she ran," Mellish points out. "She was backed into a corner and did the only thing she could."
"It's better than surrender, and being taken captive," Reiben adds. "Assuming that's what they would have done, rather than kill her on the spot."
"Fair point," Miller agrees.
"I didn't mean to cause any trouble. I'll go," Jamie decides.
Wade is getting into a strop as he argues with Jamie that she is injured and in no condition to travel alone. Jamie adds to this as she refuses medicine for the pain. Miller steps in, telling Jamie she's staying with them and to take the medicine to help with the pain. He looks at her, daring her to challenge him just because she's not part of his squad. Jamie sighs, giving in to Miller's command. She takes the pain relief pills that Wade hands her.
The seven men are aware of their limited food supply, but they refuse to let Jamie go hungry. They do the best they can to give her food without flying through their supply. The plan is to stay in the church until dawn. Miller is aware the swaud has a stubborn addiction, but he refuses to let Jamie go off on her own while recovering from injury.
