In Ella Shohot's "Area Studies, Gender Studies, and the Cartographies of Knowledge" on page 74 she references "IMF-generated poverty" as a potential cause of worsening social conditions in places practicing clitoridectomy.
Though the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) were supposed to have policies to reduce global poverty, the IMF's policies have actually had the opposite effect.
Structural adjustment policies were meant to ensure that countries repaid their debts on time, but it actually caused countries to spend less money on health and infrastructure, lowering the standard of living in poor countries.
This is an example of Western solutions not fixing the problems of the communities they purport to help.
