Their name is Struffoli 💛
Merry Christmas Eve to those who partake!
My family makes honey balls every year.
We call them gigis, short for gigidetta.
Most people seem to call them struffoli.
I've also heard the word binulata used for them. (To my family, binulata is bread with ground beef, olives, and onions)
If any of y'all are of Italian descent, can you tell me if you're northern or southern Italian (my family is sicilian, so southern), and what you call honey balls?
I've been trying to find anyone else who uses the name gigidetta for honey balls for years!
Are you of Italian descent? What do you call honey balls?

Baked Italian Vegan Struffoli (Italian Honey Balls)
✨Gluten-Free Struffoli!✨
Struffoli (singular: struffolo) are a traditional christmas dessert here in Naples and the surrounding region! They're small sweet dough balls, deep fried and coated with honey.
They're one of my favorite sweet dishes ever, and they're extremely easy to make, so I'm sharing my recipe. I do them gluten free because I have celiacs, but you can just use all purpose flour instead ofc!!!
500g of flour (I use Schaer's Mix C, but tbh it doesn't matter, any all purpose will do!)
5 eggs
about 40 g of butter
about 75 g of sugar
1 pinch of cinnamon (or more if it's too bland)
grated zest of 1 lemon
grated zest of 1 orange
50 ml of Strega liqueur (a bit of hard liqueur helps with the dough, and this traditional one has a lot of spices, so helps in giving them a nice aroma. You could probably substitute with a more flavourless hard liqueur and add some more aromas on the side imo!)
1 pinch of baking soda
1 pinch of salt (and honey, sprinkles and candied fruit (if you like them) to decorate!)
You just need to mix everything together and make a dough - it should be pretty soft and easy to work with, like play dough. The canonical way to make the lil balls is to roll the pastry into thin sticks, then cut them in half a cm little pieces. In my household we actually roll them into balls, probably because we like to suffer.
Then you deep fry in a small, tall pan full of oil, until they're golden all over. Once the whole batch is done, you can mix them in a big bowl with honey, candied fruit, and sprinkles!
🧡💛Enjoy!!💛🧡
This struffoli recipe pairs the perfect citrus flavors of orange and lemon with the sweetness of honey to bring a pop of freshness to your Christmas dessert!

Struffoli, an Italian dessert made from fried spiced dough balls coated in orange-infused honey and topped with sprinkles. My grandmother was a superb Italian cook but developed Alzheimer’s when I was very young so I don’t remember anything else she made but this wonderful, sticky mess of a dessert. It was one of my favorite sweets at Christmas and I learned to make it myself as a grown man. I made this batch a few weeks ago and it’s the best I’ve managed yet.
