Rest = Lying Down, Eyes Closed Because other parts of the program from England made sense, I decided to try resting every afternoon. After some experimentation, I determined that the most restorative rest resulted from lying down in a quiet place with my eyes closed. I was surprised at the results from taking a 15-minute rest in mid-afternoon. Even that short break seemed to help, reducing my symptoms, increasing my stamina and making my life more stable. After a while I added a similar rest in late morning. Over time, I came to believe that my scheduled rest was the most important strategy I used in my recovery. Resting everyday according to a fixed schedule, not just when I felt sick or tired, was part of a shift from living in response to symptoms to living a planned life. The experience showed me that rest could be used for more than recovering from doing too much; it could be employed as a preventive measure as well. In the terms suggested by someone in our self-help program, I learned the difference between recuperative rest and pre-emptive rest. Surprisingly, taking pre-emptive rests greatly reduced the time I spent in recuperative rest, because I was experiencing much less Post-Exertional Malaise. The result was that my total rest time was reduced.

But when I say the “wholesome and funny” YouTube short I have been handed of students surprise showing their teachers 10+ year old photos of themselves and most them were emo/goth in some way and every single one now has medium brown beach waves and is wearing head to toe beige and immediately screams and hides the photo like it’s the most embarrassing thing in the world is a hallmark of a deeply insidious tendency to associate socially acceptable WASPy aesthetics with maturity and responsibility and perpetuates the idea that everyone grows up, “gets right” and becomes the most digestible unobtrusive heterosexual I’m “taking it too seriously”

On the Embrace Autism RAADS controversy (and why we’re focusing on the wrong thing):

There’s a controversy over on instagram about a provider giving instructions on how to increase one’s score on the RAADS-R, but no one is talking about a bigger problem:

That the RAADS-R kind of sucks.

It’s 18 years old. The thing is so dated that if it were human, it would be old enough to vote. We have a ton of research since then.

Not to mention the horrendous questions about sympathy and whether you enjoy being with your friends. They show an archaic understanding of autistic people’s ability to care and connect.

The AQ deserves more scrutiny too. It’s 25 years old; I’m in my 30s, and I was in 4th grade when that thing was published! And few people seem aware that its creator built his career on the sexist “extreme male brain theory”. The screener reflects both his sexism and his belief that autistic people are unlikely to be creative or appreciate storytelling.

Honestly? I don’t care all that much whether someone is giving tips on how to take the RAADS.

I do care that in 2026, we’re still forced to rely on biased screeners from my pre-DSM-5, pre-double-empathy-problem childhood. We deserve tools that aren’t fossils (and the CATI looks pretty promising).

WAIT HOLD ON I cannot fucking believe when I was like four years old my parents were cajoling me to walk with the family and trying to get me to keep up even though I kept insisting that I was "tired" until they took me to a doctor and found out my LUNGS DIDN'T WORK. how insane that we live in a world where reasonably loving parents think their FOUR YEAR OLD is trying to be LAZY. like they were mortified to be clear. adults are just so trained to ignore children's complaints as untrustworthy, kids just need discipline, they can't possibly speak for themselves. what the fuuuuck.
