Dear Mr. Gregor Johann Mendel,

Happy Birthday! I’m earlier than most would be to this party but that doesn’t really matter. While I know that you’re likely never going to see this I thought it would be worthwhile to know.

I have not allowed for your studies to be forgotten, in fact I’m one of the few working tirelessly to document all the data I can.

Your work is honestly the only reason why I’m still here today to be writing this. It’s all I have left, and I hope that you’re able to be proud of what I’ve done.

I have a greenhouse full of pea plants meaning that even if I may not be who you were expecting. I’m doing my best to carry on your legacy.

P.S: I’m glad we share a birthday, it’s just one of life’s craziest coincidences. I don’t mind splitting my cake if it’s with you though!

This book got me unexpectedly feeling a type of way about Gregor Mendel's pea experiments... just imagining all that work, carefully crossbreeding and tending to literally thousands of plants, not knowing that what he discovered would have such far reaching impact after he was gone... scorned as a lunatic monk and failed teacher by "proper" scientists... the fact that when he died a younger monk described him as "Gentle, freehanded, and kindly... flowers he loved." Theres something just so quietly tragic about it
