Summary: Dolohov missed killing Remus by an inch and he went on to face a more complex fate. Tonks never dueled her Aunt Bellatrix and found Remus during the Battle. 2 stones dropped into the pond instead of being taken away entirely; what do the ripples affect?
--
Alternate Universe where Remus and Tonks survive the Battle of Hogwarts, but not without cost. How will it change Teddy? How will it change Harry? How will it change Hogwarts? How will it change them?
Part 1
Remus
Remus did not remember an attack. It was...unnerving. He could feel the hard stone steps beneath him. Surmised he was sprawled across them. Quite cold. He was looking...up. Vaulted ceilings, dim, distant. Something about him was...heaving. What....? Very cold.
A movement of lavender across his vision. The bright color brought back a flash of memory of a green light--moments ago? He couldn’t...what….
“--mus? Remus, baby, please--please, are you--?” Dora. Purple hair. Deeply shaken. An edge to her breath, dragged in too sharp, too deep. “Please, pleasepleaseplease--”
Why? He opened his mouth to--what? Assure her? Ask what was going on? It didn’t matter, all that came out was warmth seeping down his cheek, chin and a clotted wet cough. Dora gave a high, breathless sob. “No no, it’s okay, it’s okay, don’t try to talk, don’t, it’s okay.”
But he had to. What was going on? As she moved her hand to stroke his hair, he could see she was shaking badly. “Wh-wh-wh--?” Oh. He must be shaking too. His teeth were chattering like...ice mice. Cold. Ice. Ice mice. What was he doing? Asking. Right. “Wha-what.” That...didn’t even sound like a voice. Like...meat, dragged across a stone floor. Another cough squeezed out of him. His mouth tasted like copper.
“‘What’?” She rose up on her knees over him in frantic attention, eyes huge in her stark face. Very pale, freckles like spots a blood. A burn over half her face. Purple-brown beginnings of a black eye blotting like ink. “‘What’ what, sweetheart?”
“Hhh--” Deep breath, through a gurgle. Try again. “Hhhere?”
“W-what here? What--?” She sounded bewildered and quavery--she sniffed, swiped a hand across her nose. Left a red streak behind. “You mean…you mean where are we?”
A sudden crash and scream nearby, out of his vision. Remus jerked in surprise and Dora threw herself on top of him. Dark. Close. Smelled like her. And burnt hair, sweat. Blood. The green light flashed against the backs of his eyelids again, a memory. Then, a forest, dark and quiet, grim. He could dimly feel the uneven corners of stone steps jutting into his scalp. Shoulders. Back. Hips. Why was everything so disjointed? Dora drew back slowly, staring to the left intently for a moment, then darted back down to him, stroking his hair again. Was he still shaking? There was something lopsided about his vision. “Shhh, shhh, it’s alright, they’re not here,” she soothed, to herself as well as him. “Where? Um,” she looked around helplessly, then back down at him with a bemused smile that crumpled at the edges. “We’re at Hogwarts, Remus. You-Know-Who is here. Do you not--?”
There was a tinny ringing, approaching from far away. As it grew, Dora's blanched face began to dissolve against his sight as her eyes widened, mouth widened. Instead, dark trees pressed against his awareness. He couldn’t...feel. Remus looked around and caught on-- ”Harry?”
The boy looked a mess. Grimy, sweaty, a scrape across his face, eyes shadowed, huge and lost behind his glasses. Grass stains on his knees.
“Remus?” The voice was not Harry’s. That’s--
He jerked around and James was staring at him, looking just as bewildered as his son. Living son. Sirius over his shoulder, young, frowning. Lily was-- Cold was creeping back through him and the world shifted nauseatingly without him, as if he were falling from a great height. Dora slid back over him again, much closer, face twisted in a rictus of panic, clutching his head. Oh, I don’t like this...something in him whined like a piteous child, behind the slow, implacable revolving, rocking. Everything was no longer numb, but tingling like bees had gotten beneath his skin. Swarming, Buzzing. Ugh.
Dora was no longer looking at him, but away, screaming...something. If he pulled himself up, he could hear…. “Arthur! Arthur, please--!”
His vision lolled--or head? She must have let go--and he saw a face, not a foot away. Bloody. Savage. Dead. Familiar. Fenrir? Fenrir. Somewhere, very far in the back of his mind, something started screaming about something. Not here, though. The man’s blank, blue eyes were fixed on nothing, lax. A pattern of trees washed over his face and the world tilted again. A flash of Harry’s face in the forest over Fenrir’s. Then, just Fenrir, mouth and jaw coated in blood, a chunk of something gory oozing from his parted lips. Something closer caught his eye; dark. A dark pool spreading along the stones. How had he drunk so much blood? Something was wrong with that. Not from Fenrir...Oh. Was he bleeding? It seemed absurd, just now. Couldn’t really figure out why. A whirl of motion again and he was looking up at 2 faces. 1 and a half. There was something wrong with his vision, but he couldn’t quite--
A hoarse voice. Not Dora. “We’re going to get you out, Lupin, alright? We’re going to bring you downstairs,” said Not-Dora. Man. Red...glasses.
Remus’ face must have been doing...something, because Not-Tonks leaned down and gripped his shoulder. He felt it through a sheet of glass. Of buzzing. “We’ve got you, Remus, it’s alright.” Arthur. It was Arthur.
“Yes, it’s me; we’ve got you.” He must have said it out loud. Maybe mouthed it. Torches passed by--they were moving? The drag of their after-images was branches. Why? Lily’s voice, as though through a wall, muffled; “You’ve been so brave.”
Something cradled his head. Dora. He could feel his shaking against her, her shaking against him. Everything was trembling. A sudden spear, made of blinding light and fire and sharp electric agony lanced up through him and he sank, like a stone. No more Dora, no more forest.
Black.
Tonks
Tonks felt her husband's shuddering suddenly stop and gritted her teeth, clamped her hands down harder on the gouges in his throat that were steadily pumping blood up against her fingers, seeping, staining everything scarlet. The blood meant he was alive. He was still alive. He would stay alive. He would live. Oh, God….
She must have said it out loud, because Arthur looked back at her from the other end of the conjured stretcher. “What?” There was a bruise that spanned half his forehead.
“Nothing. He-he just stopped moving, but it’s fine.” He didn’t know where we are, he’s not moving, he’s not moving--- “It’s fine. It’s--It’s fine. He’s still breathing. It’s--”
A clatter. Someone staggered around the corner. Both she and Arthur automatically whipped their wands toward them.
A boy, small and blonde, no more than 15 wearing a torn Gryffindor robe, the collar soaked with blood. His face was stark white, making the gashes across his face, throat, and scalp that much more horrific in contrast. Like red open mouths. His fangs had been in his throat--- “Couldn’t...I couldn’t find...Great Hall….” he mumbled, sounding dazed. “He said...I should go but….”
“Here, come with us, it’s alright,” Arthur held out his hand earnestly. “We’re going there, Madame Pomfrey can help. You’ll be alright.”
The student stared at him a moment, not seeming to comprehend. Then, he said, “Oh.” His hand went to his face and, before Tonks could open her mouth to stop him, brushed over the deep slices across his cheek, smearing his face and palm with even more blood. He looked down at it, blankly puzzled. “Oh.” He repeated.
“We need to hurry,” Tonks pleaded, desperately. She would not look down at Remus. She couldn’t. You-Know-Who had just called for Harry, they had a lull in the fight---they had an hour. Remus did not have an hour. “Please!”
Arthur started again, grasping the lad by the hand and towing him along briskly, wand held out to support the stretcher. “It’s alright,” he said again, to no one in particular; probably both of them. “It’s going to be alright.”
How do you know how do you know? So much blood, so so so much, you didn’t see, you didn’t see what Fenrir did, how he had him---
“What’s your name?”
The boy stumbled along obediently beside them. “Uh...uh…” His eyes didn’t seem to be tracking so well, until they wandered down to the body suspended between them. “That’s Profess-ssor Lupin,” his tone sounded bewildered. “No, but...h-he told me...he’s the one…that man Fenrir---” Stop stop stop stop stop---
“Eyes up here, son,” Arthur said, firmly, and his glazed gaze jumped back to him. “Your name?”
“Colin….”
“Colin…?”
“Creevey.”
“Alright, Colin. Do you remember what happened? Talk to me.”
They were taking the stairs, clattering down at speed and Tonks nearly toppled down on a slick step. Blood. His? Some other victim? A shriek sounded, distantly, a crash even though the battle was on hold. Dust coated her throat. Remus still wasn’t moving but his blood was, she could feel the flutter of it against her palms, the cooling, congealing mess down her robe front. She could smell its metal tang. The trembling of her wand, the green light, the Curse she had….
“Not...There was that F-Fenrir Greyback ‘n h-he...Professor said....S’cold….” he slurred, sagging onto Arthur’s shoulder.
“We’re here, we got here, Colin, it’ll be alright, just--”
A young witch darted forward and caught him deftly by the elbow just as his knees gave way just as they entered the Great Hall. 4 other figures converged on them rapidly--Madam Pomfrey one of them--initiating a flurry of movement like a flint striking sparks. Colin was whisked away as Arthur called, “He said it was Greyback, I think he’s in shock.”
Someone tried to move her away by her elbow--whether to lead her away or not she didn’t know but Tonks lunged and clutched the stretcher like it was a raft in the ocean. “NO!”
“We’re not taking him anywhere, but I’ve got to get next to him,” Madam Pomfrey said authoritatively, firmly displacing her with a purposeful sidestep. Suddenly, her ample hips seemed at once a weapon and a shield. “Stay if you want, but I need to be here.” She smelled of a pungent antiseptic, soot and burning, blood and flowers. Tonks’ head spun.
Dimly, she heard Arthur answer, “Greyback, again,” to one of the medical wizards’ question. Then, “No, he’s dead.”
The words sent a juddering through her, like she was caught in the field of some electric hex. Dead. Fenrir was dead. No. No, it wasn’t passive. It was done to him. Killed. Fenrir had been killed. Green light….Can’t move fast enough, can’t run fast enough….
There were hands everywhere on her husband, moving, cutting, pressing, prodding and she fought the urge to knock them all away, to curl around his body. Protect him, retroactively, from the savaging that was done him. Their voices were brusque and controlled--even so, she heard the tightly grasped horror. She heard the shock they suppressed. It repulsed her that she now knew the dull, enveloped crack of breaking bone, she could feel the rip that skin---her tongue felt thick in her mouth, her throat was closing, her stomach squelched---
Remus made a noise; hoarse, torn. It pulled her back to now. Reaching out, she threaded her fingers through his hair, brushed his scalp before a brisk movement of one of the witches jarred her free. She couldn’t look at him. Physically couldn’t lay eyes on his face. Not from nausea, not from disgust; it just laid her bare. That was her face, her gentle eyes, her kind mouth. If he...if he….This couldn’t be how she remembered him if….
lily is slightly drunk when she signs up for gbbo. her mum has just passed away and baking was their thing. lily would come home after a bad day and her mother would already be setting out things so they could bake a cake together
she works for a small online magazine and tells herself she could use the exposure, but really she knows she’s doing it because it would make her mum so happy
james is an teacher. his students love him, parents love him, his fellow teachers love him
he also makes the best scones in the entire world. sirius would marry one if he could
he, remus, and peter have definitely wrestled over which flavor james should make
sirius signs up in james’ name and announces it by spelling out “BAKE OFF” with jaffa cakes on their kitchen table
james cries, sirius cries, they clean up by eating every single jaffa cake in eight minutes
so the auditions are long and grueling but our kiddos are great bakers and they delight the producers and both earn spots on the show
when they come to film james’ intro on the show they think sirius is his husband at first
mostly because they call each other babe constantly
they ask how sirius feels about his partner doing this and he starts telling this ridiculous story about how he baked twenty cakes in the shape of toilets they saw on their travels around the world for their wedding
and then remus calls from the other room, “they’re not married!”
everyone has dinner before filming so they can all get to know each other
james gets there pretty late bc when is he not and the only available seat is beside the most beautiful person he has ever seen in his life
she smiles at him and he dies right there
he’s so flustered that instead of introducing himself, he’s like, “so, have you ever baked before?”
she kinda laughs but just says, “yeah, i bake a little.”
lily shows up on the first day of filming with five bags of ingredients
james shows up with a pair of novelty darth vader oven mitts
the signature and technical challenges are pretty simple stuff, they’re both in the middle of the pack
but then, the showstopper
they have to bake 48 fairy cakes/cupcakes
james ices and arranges his to look like paul hollywood’s face
mel and sue are laughing so hard they can’t speak
paul LOVES it ofc and james gets his first of TWO paul hollywood handshakes
lily has it a little harder
paul and mary love the flavor of her grapefruit and white chocolate fairy cakes but say they could’ve used a few more minutes in the oven and she cries
it’s not a big deal, plenty of people did a lot worse, but she’s so upset
james feels awful so in the next episode he makes a big show of tripping as he takes his eclairs out of the oven, which destroys them
(he was going to start over anyways, but he hopes it might make her laugh a little)
she knows exactly what he’s doing, but she laughs anyways
james has somehow made every single thing from the technical challenges but he always forgets what they’re supposed to look like
paul hollywood laughs for a solid two minutes when he somehow turns the buttercream in his opera cakes bright green
“they’re delicious, but james… they’re green”
“yes sir that would be the mint i added”
“why did you do that?”
“i don’t… know???”
james is better at showstoppers because he’s so dramatic and loves building things
lily is really good at tiny details and piping too
they’re making sculptures out of biscuits for one showstopper and he’s making a 3D postcard of the world (yes, he’s dumb)(yes, sue knocks over the eiffel tower four times) and he calls lily over to show him how to pipe details on the Sydney Opera House better
their hands brush over the piping bag
things are getting truly wild over here
people all over twitter are thirsting over james. he’s this season’s tamal
but people also notice how james and lily look at each other as they bake
paul makes a face over lily’s pomegranate iced matcha shortbread bc somehow he doesn’t like the matcha flavor but he can’t taste it either and she just barely rolls her eyes
the camera cuts to james who high fives her as she walks back
he asks to taste one after judging ends and she picks one up and straight up feeds it to him
he starts moaning about how it’s the best thing he’s ever eaten
the camera gets it all and the next day, there’s two buzzfeed articles and many, many gifs
james steals chocolate chips from her constantly
he throws some to her and she tries to catch them in her mouth like jake and amy in “the bet” from brooklyn nine-nine
they lay on the ground together as they wait for things to bake and he braids her hair
y’all know james is star baker of bread week. he nails that focaccia! everything is perfectly proved and baked! another paul hollywood handshake!
lily makes a pretty good apricot and chocolate braided bread for the signature
while james’ loaf is proving she’s making her apricot spread and is like, “while you’re sitting around, come knead this for a sec”
so she finishes up the spread as he kneads her dough
he does that really loud slapping method too
-lily: “so that’s the method you go with? i’m prefer really getting my hands in there”
mel and sue tell them they’re putting them out of a job
lily cries when they say james is that week’s star baker
at the end of the episode they interview her and through her tears she keeps saying how proud she is and how much he deserves it
“he never shuts up about bread! never! i’ve never met someone so passionate about dough!”
the next week is retro week
she ties a scarf in her hair and makes the best black forest gateau anyone has ever had
she and james bump hips when they announce that she’s star baker
and finally it’s the finale and they’ve both made it along with a nice grandmother who’s good, if a bit old fashioned
they both swear the other will win
they’re rolling out dough in the signature and lily starts humming “wannabe” from the spice girls and james just starts singing along
and they look up and do the rap together and roll out the dough in sync
the final challenge is to do a tower of macarons
lily makes him close his eyes and taste her fillings so she knows the flavors are strong enough
“what flavors are you getting?”
“lemon???”
“yeah, but what kind?”
“what kinds are there?”
“i don’t know!”
she smears some of his face and he doesn’t wipe it off
they finish and go out to the big tea party. sirius, remus, and peter sit at a table with them and eat both
they do their interview together. lily smiles and says, “i don’t care if i win. either way, i think things are going to be fine.”
they hold hands as they wait for the winner to be announced. neither of them notice.
when they call out lily’s name she turns to james and kisses him
mel and sue are shook
“looks like we’ve actually got two winners today!”
they both become famous afterwards, and both have cookbooks
james remains a teacher but lily becomes sort of a lauren conrad type figure and has a wildly popular baking blog
they are revered on social media in the best way (with no weird fans), and often post pictures of bakes with the caption “guess who made this one?”
Oh please give me jealous lily, I live for that, LIVE FOR IT!!! It is my #1 favourite thing
“why did you say no to a hogsmeade date if you wanted to go with him?”
“but i don’t want to go with him.”
“then why are we following his every move.”
lily glares. mary winks. “oh stop smirking like that mary, like you’re all smug about something.”
“you like him!”
“i do not!”
they’re both hiding behind a bush, a bush right near spintwiches sporting needs. where james potter, sirius black and portia jacobs are currently browsing the newest broom model.
“do you think she likes him?” lily has crisp, brown leaves stuck in her hair. her eyes are wide, watching like a hawk as jacobs laughs at something james must have said.
“what’s not to like? he’s good looking, quidditch star james potter”
lily hates to admit that mary’s right. it feels strange thinking of arrogant potter like that.
sirius rolls his eyes and wanders towards the display in the window. they move a little too late, sirius notices the flash of deep red hair. lily swears and they both dive to the floor.
“something in there that’s taking your fancy, evans?” three minutes later and sirius stands in front of them, grinning, eyes gleaming with his hands in his pockets. lily scowls. “no. there’s nothing i want in there.”
“now now evans, you know you’re really bad at lying right?”
“i wanted to get some… lotion. that err stuff you put on your broom to make it, um, smooth.”
sirius grins, and lily starts to fear for her life. “fleetwood’s high-finish handle polish? well, what do you know - you’re in luck because i just saw some in the shop.”
“on second thought, it’s okay! i don’t need any-”
“ah, but i just remembered that i do though. come on, lily. you can come with me.”
she puts up a bit of a fight, but ends up stomping into the shop with sirius and mary holding onto her from either side.
james looks up in an instant, cheeks blossoming with pink. a hand rushes to his hair. “oh, evans! and err hi macdonald, sirius.”
“potter.” lily barely gives him a glance before she pulls the two giggling idiots to the other end of the shop. she glares back behind her, where james is back to talking to with portia about the strength and speed of the new nimbus.
“you’re one hard woman to please, evans. the guy asks you out, you turn him down and then start stalking him and acting like it’s his fault.”
“it is his fault! look at him! the way he’s all going heart shaped eyes at mrs ‘i love quidditch since yesterday’ jacobs.
“lily. he’s talking, that’s all he’s doing.” “yeah, not like they’re planning their wedding vows or whatever.” “they want to get married?!”
two hands fly up to her mouth, shushing and pushing her back to the farthest corner. sirius black taps his chin and shakes his head. “honestly, i don’t know why you rejected him in the first place.”
“i panicked, okay! i was terrified because i was like crap! i actually think he’s kinda hot and grown up a lot and i didn’t want to prove that what i was feeling was… oh my god, you two stop smiling like that.”
lily picks up the polish and the three walk in a tangle to the checkout. james potter is alone. “your girlfriend realise that quidditch is off the ground and she’s afraid of heights?” there’s no sign of portia jacobs and lily pounces at the opportunity like a ravenous lion.
it’s so quiet that the tick of the clock beats like a megaphone in the shop. sirius sucks in a breath and scratches his nose and mary tries and fails to bite the smile off her lips. they both take a step back, holding onto each other as they watch the scene unfold.
“i don’t even know what your problem is, evans.” james rolls his eyes, grabs onto a broomstick servicing kit and marches towards the till too. there’s a thirty-ish year old man being served first and the lady who’s browsing nearby tuts at the disturbance.
“my problem?” lily looks like she’s about to cast an unforgiveable curse. “i wasn’t just chatting up some ravenclaw who was batting her eyelids like she had dust in her eyes.”
james laughs rather madly. “says the one who’s been following me around all day like a leech.”
“i was doing no such thing! take that potter, how dare you-”
“oh? so when i was leaving hogwarts and i turned around and you pretended to be a statue-”
“i was practising the valuable lesson of being still, potter. don’t flatter yourself. why would i follow you?”
the man hurries out of the shop and the lady who’s browsing quickly follows. the cashier lady looks uncomfortable. “do you have your camera?” sirius whispers into mary’s ear.
james lets out a huff and bangs his broom kit onto the till. “because you like me, evans, and you’re afraid to admit it.”
“ugh you are so infuriating potter! you act like the whole world revolves around you!”
“just admit that you’re jealous, lily. you’re such a bad liar.”
silence falls once more, the air thick and tense. mary and sirius are practically hugging, not believing what’s happening.
“i am not jealous, you got that potter?” she takes an aggressive step towards him. she’s a foot smaller than him, but james takes a small step backwards anyways - stumbling into the till.
“crystal clear.” he gulps, holding onto the cabinet for dear life as lily takes another step. she’s got him cornered.
“and i fancy you, okay? can you keep that in your egotistical head?”
james potter blinks. “you, you what?”
lily furrows her eyebrows. “what?”
“you just said you fancy me.”
“i said i DIDN’T fancy you.”
“pretty sure you said ‘i fancy you.’ evans.” sirius is cackling by now, grabbing onto mary for support. lily gives him the finger and stomps another step closer to james. so close, she’s almost stepping on his toes. he looks down at her, a lopsided, elated grin adorning his blushing cheeks.
“wipe that stupid smile off your face, potter.” lily snaps, and before she knows it she’s grabbing hold of james’ jacket, standing on her tip toes and snogging him senseless.
james drops his money on the floor, mary slaps a galleon into the open hand of sirius’ and the cashier lets out a frightened gasp when james picks up lily, her legs around his waist.
“so are you... buying anything or?” the till lady asks in a whisper.
he falls in love like this: six years old giggling in the treehouse with sugared lips. they fight dragons and travel through jungles from the safety of the garden. they are young and the way she laughs, with her nose scrunched up and eyes closed makes him laugh too. and just like that, marlene sits in his heart.
he falls in love like this: a train carriage, wind rattling the windows and bertie botts beans littering the floor. he falls in love with carved cheekbones and a love of puns, with grey eyes and that feeling already that the same blood runs in their veins. he falls in love with a brother, with sirius.
he falls in love like this: a silent dormitory with a skeletal remus hunched in the corner. he has hollowed cheeks and purple bruises under his eyes. he falls in love with jokes muttered under breaths and a knowing twitch of the lips. there is a stirring in his bones and he knows, he knows he will protect this one with his last breath if he can.
he falls in love like this: the early hours of the morning, practicing with him again and again and again until peter can get it right. watching the watery eyes light up when the spell finally works or the essay is done. watching as he tries so hard to fit in without knowing he already does.
he falls in love like this: sixth year on the quidditch pitch, mary’s lilting voice through the megaphone, jokes and goddamn awful puns trickling out of her as the game plays on. he’s laughing so hard he nearly falls off his broom and he thinks he can’t live in a world without the warmth she makes in his chest.
he falls in love like this: the months between january and february, the days inbetween monday and tuesday, the seconds between night and day. he falls in love in the time that doesn’t exist, surely, because how could he forget falling in love, how could he not remember the moment? he falls in love with a girl with flowers in her name and in her ribs; with the pure sunlight in her veins, with the kindness overflowing from her pores. he falls in love with her smile and her lips and her soul. he falls in love with lily evans, or maybe he just always was.
he falls in love like this: a tiny baby balanced in his arms, black hair dusting his tiny head. He coughs in his sleep, eyelids fluttering open to reveal forests. there are tears in his eyes and he wants to hold him forever, to wrap him up and lock him away where he will never feel any pain or hurt. he falls in love with the future, with quidditch matches and christmas mornings, with tantrums and hugs and motorbike rides with sirius. he falls in love with his son, with harry.
he falls in love with life, with nature, with his beating heart and expanding lungs. he falls in love with a world that doesn’t love him back, with people who betray him, with people who leave. he falls in love with a life he cannot have, a life he will never live.

NICE NICE NCIENCIENCIECNICENCEI GOOD LIST!!!!!
i honestly.................love the shared experience of 80s songs that didnt necessarily make it out of australia like................gnome offence to americans but i dont want to share the concept of a sunday arvo barbie with the neighbours and you’re tucking in to some kabana and cheese cubes and your mum chucks on some paul kelly to get everyone to settle down after your dad and your neighbour’s fiancé get in an argument about how burnt the snags should be.......like that experience is Ours
