steve never talks about his breakup with nancy -- to anyone. not because he doesn't want to, but because he's still so angry about it. as far as he's concerned, they had a fight, and then she was running off with shitty byers, kissing him and god knows what else and --

he doesn't like talking about it. doesn't like thinking about it. it's his first broken heart, first loss of trust. he stays away from her, from them, as best as he can, but it's like there's a tether, because he always finds himself back in their circle at some point, and he hates it.

it isn't until when he's going through the upside down with munson and robin and nancy following that he almost finally loses it.

"how can she possibly be in love with me when she cheated on me, munson?" he snaps quietly before walking away, not noticing the look of confusion on munson's face, nor the straightening of his shoulders as he vows to do something.
