I know it’s talked about a lot in the existing lore and that there are clues even in the first game about Neow’s true nature, but…I don’t think we talk enough about how scary she genuinely is
I feel like since we are experiencing things through the POVs of the slayers aka her puppets, we don’t really get to see how insidious and vicious Neow is and how she could probably easily ruin the lives of her puppets (if they turn against her) like she ruined the Architect’s life by concocting the Blight. As the ignorant slayers, we perceive this very sanitized version of Neow, who is seemingly benevolent at best with her various blessings that help us in combat and like…a means to a greater end at worst (killing the Heart in 1 and now the Architect in 2). Seeing some of the cutesy fan art with Neow with the characters in the Neowsletters makes me laugh a bit because it really feels like pro-Neow propaganda somehow given the fact that she’s the REASON the Blight and the Spire exist in the first place (it’s her old, withered Ancient tree sans branches) and how vengeful and petty she really is. I can’t help but imagine if after facing the Architect and perhaps curing him of his Blight after fighting him (instead of killing him like we think we are about to during the fight), we get a surprise twist to the true ending where the slayers learn the truth behind him being the way he was and fight Neow as the true final boss, putting an end to the misery that she put them through (obviously the game will still be playable after, but lore-wise it IS their true ending).
(speaking of which, I have an AU idea where Neow becomes the very powerful fascist tyrant of Preon that I’m kind of working on and will expand on in a later post — the TL;DR is that she escapes imprisonment/exile by her fellow Ancients like in canon and instead becomes known publicly amongst the citizens as the Mother of Resurrection responsible for “saving” and “resurrecting” Preon. The Blight still poisoned the Architect and the Spire was still formed, but unlike in canon the Blight had less impactful negative effects so it didn’t spread beyond her tree. The Capital around the Spire was also constructed much earlier/became a bustling metropolis much sooner. The Architect is imprisoned and significantly weakened due to Blight, but still has some of his old mind and has a secret underground resistance supporting him. Neow engages in a lot of historical revisionism and portrays the Architect as a figure who wanted to destroy the beautiful things she “created.” She has a powerful PR and propaganda machine behind her — also Preon is essentially a police state and any public mention of the Architect in a positive manner/lèse-majesté committed against Neow will result in public execution. She essentially recruits the six canon STS characters including the Watcher to kill the Architect once and for all)
like maybe a grand total of 2 people will get the reference but I couldn’t resist okay.
