But I will say that unlike with ACD which feels like it can float a bit more between mid-late 90s - mid-late 00's (though is generally a bit closer to the latter), I had to take a firmer stance on when WMIS was set, as LGBTQ+ rights have changed dramatically in the last fifty years (and some chapters referenced huge things, like Colorado's Amendment 2 and Goodridge v The Department of Public Health. I did want to maintain some leeway so dates aren't 100% on everything but Gerald and Stuart are born roughly around the late 60's-early 70s.
At the current place we left them (Gerald's office Holiday Party), it's roughly late 02-03, which means that the Goodridge case was just decided/about to be decided in the next year. That case made same-sex marriage legal in MA, but they were not recognized anywhere else in the country. So they couldn't get married even if they wanted to... for now.
Also worth noting in the main universe Stuart and Carol are not married at the time of ACD, and Gerald asked Sheila to marry him in his last year of college/they tied the knot right after he finished law school, which while average for Gen Xers, was very young for a lawyer at the type of firm he was at.
