1/27/21.

On December 16, 2020, Rob Pursey and Amelia Fletcher (formerly of Heavenly and Talulah Gosh) took over the controls of the Austin Town Hall blog.  They made about 7 posts, one of them being part of a new band, Swansea Sound (Swansea, Wales), formed with Hue from The Pooh Sticks.  I listened to “I Sold My Soul on eBay” and thought...cute.

But today I heard “Indies of the World” the A side of a single set to be released in the US on HHBTM (Happy Happy Birthday To Me).  It will also be released in Japan and UK/Europe.  The pop of this song reminds me of Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, The Pastels, BMX Bandits, KiDD and, of course some of the bands mentioned above.  Pure pop gold.

As long as you’re at HHBTM, check out the Oh Ok reissue.  I have vague memories of Lynda Stipe’s band...I didn’t realize it was this good.

Every once in a while I need to bend the blog rules.  There really are only two - the music must be on Bandcamp and there must be a physical release.  The 2nd rule sometimes gets bent.  Here we go.

Euros Childs (Wales) doesn’t have a real presence on Bandcamp.  He releases his music on The National Elf Library (all of his music is available for download - donations are appreciated).  I’ve bought a few items in the past (House Arrest, Situation Comedy and Sweetheart), and I’ve certainly made dozens of comparisons to either Euros or Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci (he also played with Norman Blake in a band called Jonny, and is currently a member of Teenage Fanclub).

But up until now, he’s never had his own post, mostly because there just aren’t releases on Bandcamp.  I’m tired of this, so I found this great track from the 2015 Indietracks Compilation as a way to satisfy the first rule.  For rule two, please click the link for Gingerbread House Explosion, his late 2019 release (Stuart Kidd and Stephen Black).  It’s got a classic Euros Childs sounds with a few surprises like “I Love Hippy” with a great falsetto.

4/1/19.

Is it normal for a release to become available so soon after its recording.  Stuart Kidd (Glasgow, Scotland) recorded “Chance Weekend” between December 2018 and January 2019.  Stuart recorded this “in the cupboard by myself”.  Check out the picture on his Bandcamp page to see what that means.   It is being self-released by KiDD (Zenzerino Records).

Stuart Kidd has played with such amazing bands/musicians as Euros Childs, BMX Bandits and Jonny (the list actually goes on).  He released a great LP on Spain’s Pretty Olivia Records.  This is a more subtle affair (for the most part).  Harmonies abound and pop is the main course.  The whole release is enjoyable, but listen to “Little One”, and tell me it’s not a beautiful combination of Pete & The Pirates, Euros Childs, Mojave 3 and The Bats.  Beautiful.

You really should read the story of the recording of this album (song by song).  To summarize, there’s a good reason the record is called “Chance Weekend”.

Scenario:  A single musician plays for the following bands:  Euros Childs, BMX Bandits, Jonny, The Wellgreen, Dr. Cosmos’ Tape Lab, and Linden.

Stuart Kidd (Glasgow, Scotland) is this person.  I’ve written about his other efforts indirectly, and it’s time that he gets his own post.  I would say his solo music tends more to Euros Childs/later Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, but really, you can hear all of the above in his solo work.

“Where Are the Strange People” is available on Spain’s Pretty Olivia Records (Juvenilia, Cypress, Mine!, and El Palacio de Linares).  While Kidd’s music is pop, it’s not straightforward. 

I was reminded of this release when I learned of the new digital album “You and I”.
