"Mom, Mom, what is Santa bringing me for Christmas?"
Sarah sighed with annoyance and replied, "AJ! He won't bring you anything if you keep asking me that question every morning!"
"Mom! This afternoon can we go have a snow fight with our friends in the forest behind the house?"
Sarah poured herself a second cup of coffee, "Yes, yes, yes, that way I can bake my Christmas cookies in peace."
She sat down to continue her breakfast under the amused gaze of Bucky who was enjoying the happy hubbub in the Wilson's kitchen every morning. Sam and he had come to spend a few days for Christmas with them.
His gaze rose to the figure that had just cut through the kitchen door and he stood up to walk over to Sam with a cup of coffee.
But Sam started coughing really hard and Bucky noticed his condition now that he wasn't against the light, Sam looked exhausted and leaned on the doorjamb for support as his knees shook.
"Shit."
Sarah and Bucky rushed to him and it was Bucky who was able to pick him up just before he collapsed.
"Sam?" He held him up by the arm, "What the hell are you doing out of bed in your condition?"
Sam looked at him as if he had said something absurd as Bucky led him to the nearest chair. He made him comfortable and noticed the thin layer of sweat on Sam's forehead, the glassy eyes and the huge dark circles under his eyes. Sarah ushered the kids out of the kitchen as Bucky leaned over Sam and took his head in his hands, looking him straight in the eye.
"Sam, Doll, you're hot," Bucky mumbled.
He tenderly wiped the sweat from Sam's forehead, who tried to be humorous, despite his condition.
"Is that a compliment?"
"Sam, love..." Bucky took on a falsely scolding air and told him, "There's no need to fish for compliments, I've already told you that you're the most handsome and sexy man I know. So don't deflect the conversation, you're burning up with fever if you want me to be clear. And I know you're aware of it, so I'll ask you again, why aren't you in bed? When will you learn that you don't have to force yourself?"
Bucky was still holding his head in his hands and stroked Sam's cheek with his thumb. Sam leaned his cheek against the hand and sighed, "I know but..."
Bucky placed a tender kiss on Sam's forehead and Sam enjoyed the coolness of Bucky's lips on his burning skin.
Bucky continued, "No buts. I'm here Sam, Sarah's here too, you have people to lean on. Okay?"
Sam tried to protest again, "But there's so much to do, I can't stay in bed."
"Babe, you can barely walk. There's nothing for you to do today." Sam understood from Bucky's deadpan tone that there was nothing for him to do but let others take over. That he had to let go.
"Come on Doll, let's get you back to our room."
Bucky put his arm firmly around Sam's shoulder and helped him to his feet. Then he supported him all the way to their room, Sam stumbling a few times until they arrived. Bucky quickly undressed him and when he helped him lie down under the still-warm bed, Sam sighed with relief.
Bucky walked away and quickly returned with some cough syrup, an aspirin and a glass of water. Sam had already started to fall asleep.
Bucky coaxed him to sit up and once Sam had swallowed it all, he dropped onto the pillow and muttered, "Tired…"
Bucky got up to go put the glass down and Sam mumbled something that he couldn't understand.
"...you're staying?"
Bucky frowned and leaned in, saying softly, "Sam, love, I didn't understand."
Sam just reached out to Bucky, grabbing his sleeve. "Stay with me...please..."
The words added to the pleading tone showed Bucky just how sick Sam was. For him to be willing to show so much vulnerability. How could Bucky refuse such a plea when it was what he wanted the most.
He loosened Sam's fingers that clutched his sleeve and kissed the palm as he said, "Yes love, I'll stay, just let me warn Sarah and the kids so they don't worry."
Which he did very quickly before joining Sam under the comforter and hugging him. Sam immediately clung to him and whispered against Bucky's chest, "Thanks."
Bucky kissed the top of his head and replied, "For that you'll never have to say thank you.Now sleep love, after this everything will be better."
He gradually felt Sam relax in his arms and stop struggling. Then Bucky allowed himself to relax as well while continuing to watch over the one he loved more than anything.
