7 Characteristics of Student Led Learning
7 Characteristics of Student Led Learning
Student led learning works best if you see yourself more as a coach and less as a dictator. While I generally determine what skills should be learned and practiced, my kids are the ones who drive the activities and lessons. Of coarse, there will be those days when a particular skill isn’t liked as much as another, but for the most part, my kids are in control of their learning and are enjoying…

Toolkit Activity: Creative Assignment
Creative Assignment Final Exam
Creative Assignment. This assignment can be a creative expression of your choosing as long as it is an original work that you have created, specifically for fulfillment of this assignment.
The creative work will be graded on the level of artistic skill that is presented, originality, application or expression of the concepts we have studied this semester, and appropriateness in the expression of those concepts. Our course has covered a variety of topics from race, class and gender to health care disparity, women’s reproductive control, lesbianism, women in the work force and body image. Be sure that your creative work incorporates the topics we have covered in a fully understandable way.
Include with your creative work a one page explanatory essay with the following guidelines: typed, single spaced, 12 point font, one inch margins. In the top right hand corner of the page type the following information on 4 lines – your name, date, WMST 2100, Final Exam Creative. If you are submitting an original song or written work such as a poem etc., you must submit the written work on a separate page than the explanatory essay.
Explanatory Essay: In your essay, explain the significance of your work. Why is this work appropriate for women’s studies? What does it say to viewers? What are you trying to express? How does this show intersecting oppression or feminist action or the concepts you have chosen to present? Write about the creative element you utilized (ex if a painting, oil, watercolor etc if a song then list instruments you use to perform it). In your explanation and analysis of your work, explain how this relates to the reading, films, images, or essays from the semester. Make use of critical thinking skills, analytical thinking, framing (what does your work mean in the larger arena of the “real world”?), historical context, and the terms and ideas of the intersecting axes of oppression, women’s agency and activism, and relation to women’s rights and or privileges or constraints of gender. Use the terminology and understanding gained from our previous assignments on gender awareness, social policy, the media and cultural images, work, and health.
These are suggestions to help you begin thinking critically about the work you are presenting. Of course not every term listed above will apply to your specific work, but you are required to answer questions that do apply to your work and that will enhance the understanding of your instructor and classmates. Keep in mind that this is a final exam assignment and will be graded as such. Do not make the assumption that because you have been given creative license that you must not maintain academic integrity and standards. Please remember to use correct English, proofread, edit and have someone else proofread your work. As always the writing center is available on campus to help you with your writing if you are unsure or need additional feedback. As discussed in class, presentation of the final exam is an option to make up for an absence or receive two extra points on a previous assignment.
Toolkit Activity: Self Selected Assignment
Self Selected Assignment List:
Choose one. Share Date : ongoing Value : 10 points
Self Selected Assignments can be turned in any time during the semester, the latest date is April15th.
Interview with a working mother: Interview a working mother about the issues she faces in combining work and family. Write a 3-4 page paper describing your findings. Do not turn in a list of answers to questions; rather, write an integrated essay that incorporates your findings. We will discuss the results in class.
Activism: Participate in an activist event and write a 3-4 page paper reporting on the experience. Provide background information on the organization sponsoring the event, the importance of the cause, and why it is meaningful to you.
.
Media Analysis: Analyze representations of women from a specific television show, film, song lyrics, or advertisement. Decide if you think the representations challenge or reinforce socially constructed attitudes toward gender, race, class and/or sexuality. What do the representations say about women? Are there hidden agendas within the representations? Include a copy of the ad or song lyrics, or a synopsis of the television show, film, or commercial. Write a 3-4 page essay, organizing the flow of your ideas logically.
Looking Ahead: You may have a clear idea of what kind of career or job you would like when you finish your education. Take this opportunity to investigate that field to explore its gender dimensions. Is it a gender-segregated or integrated field? What roles do women and men play? Does this work affect women and men in the same way? What relevance does gender have to your choices, opportunities, and limits within this field? Do not use this paper simply for personal reflection, but study the construction of this type of work, the institutions and social processes in which it is lodged, and the relationship of these larger institutions and social forces to your own life. (3-4 pages)
Assignment Alternatives : Students can earn credit through a group project as an alternative to the written assignments (Health Project, Policy Analysis). The projects must be centered around the topic of the paper, fulfill the requirements, and must be organized and presented with the cooperation of the entire group. The Women’s Center on campus will partner with students to provide space, resources, and planning assistance. The project must consist of a program to be held on campus during the semester. It will be evaluated by participants, and group members will peer evaluate as well. If you and or group members are interested in completing a program instead of the written papers, let the instructor know, in order to start planning.
