The Student Journalism Handbook is an ongoing project to produce a book full of advice, information, and interviews with past and present student journalists. It will be available as an eBook, and a limited print run will be produced with a copy for every student publication in the UK who wants one. While the book is being produced, all kinds of extra online content will be available for free on this site, including guest posts and news from the world of student journalism.
Like professional journalists, students can be subject to pressure and intimidation, but are frequently disadvantaged due to lack of experience. High turn-over of editors means wisdom isn’t always passed down effectively, whilst newly-founded publications have no former staff to turn to. Pooling resources, experiences, and suggestions will create something to turn to in a crisis, with suggestions for dealing with legal issues, battles with universities, and growing a student audience.
Right now, the project is a one-woman operation. My name is Alys, I'm a former student newspaper editor, and I'm currently in the netherworld between finishing my undergrad degree at Oxford University and starting my postgrad at City University. I have had some help though, most notably from the Philip Geddes Memorial Prize for student journalism.
The production of the book will take place over the next year. I want to interview student journalists, look at how different university newspapers are run, and talk to professional journalists who had their start in the student press. This blog will also be an important part of bringing the student journalism community together to take on the big issues facing us today. There will be guest posts, how-tos, news pieces, and round-ups of the best student media every week.
