Understanding Characters In A Story
Mr. Robertson’s class has been learning about the parts of a story, such as setting, character, and plot. Today we focused on “characters” in a story as well as a scene.
First, students drew a character. The character had to have a name, a voice, a walk, at least three favorites and three dislikes. Students then presented the character to the class to be interviewed by Mr. Martin and Mr. Robertson. The student had to stay in character, from vocal to body position and walk.
Next, Mr. Martin and Mr. Robertson gave the students instructions to do IN CHARACTER. Students had to TABLEAU, IMPROV as well as PANTOMIME at different points, all while adapting their characters to different places.
Afterwards Mr. Robertson led a discussion on the importance of the lead character in their classroom story as well as the variety of settings he interacted with.
This VSA program is provided in 2019-2020 under a contract with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
