Student Saturday: Monica D
Monica D is currently a Freshman at the University of New Haven and was a Summer 2010 trip alumnus. Here is her story!
Why did you apply to Trip of a Lifetime, either as a student, an intern, or both?
Because of the opportunity Trip of a Lifetime gave to, I felt it was my turn to give back to them by working for them. A way of saying thank you for giving me the chance to experience the west coast.
What did you learn (or are you learning) from your experience?
Not everyone is the same, there are really good people out there who want to see others people succeed.
What are you doing now to make an impact in your community?
I volunteer for my community mostly at church. I help out at the soup kitchen every Friday and I am part of the chorus at my church. Before heading off to college I was an assistant teacher for a second grade class of religion every sunday. Not only was I a satudent teacher but I was given the chance to be a special ed teacher for relig. Now, during my school breaks I volunteer at my elementary school (Columbus) and I assist my third grade teacher in helping her kids with math. I am hoping to return in may and tutor some kids in math.
What does travel mean to you?
Travel to me means getting out of my comfort zone and visiting places I have never even heard of. It's a learning experience and the environment around me can influence me to wan to be a better me. It means learning about the world and about others culture. About accepting those who are different and learning to adjust to the different kinds of environment.
What advice do you have for students considering applying for Trip of a Lifetime?
Never be afraid to take opportunities that are right in front of them. Good things always come out of it.
When you travel, what's the one item you must always pack for your journey?
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you visit? Why?
Europe. Specifically, France. I love to try new foods and see how they are different from us Americans. I love you get to know other cultures and how they live.
