So what is the headcanon you guys had about this?
Ooooo!!! That's a good one!
Well Jan explains it well there, but I'll go a bit more in-depth here!
The idea is that unlike Cross and Killer, Dream and Nightmare are not full skeletons. In fact they are half.
There are very few other monster types that can naturally have children with the skeleton type, but one of the ones who can are Elementals, like grillby would be. Due to the fact these monsters live a lot by energy, rather then physical forms.
We should clarify that this doesn't mean we think studio verse monsters can do magic, or that two monsters of the same gender can have a baby, that's not part of this idea.
The idea is that the twins father was a skeleton and their mother Nim is a fire elemental, since energy beings are made up in this universe as well.
Now Dream and Night took forms primarily skeleton, so a lot of the differences about them isn't something you can see. These differences are.
Having bones that will always feel warmer to the touch then a regular skeletons, and potentially even hot at times.
Eyes that can glare brighter, change colour and even flicker when angry.
Dream actually has freckles on a lot of his bones, which is rarer.
And lastly the potential to contract elemental illness'
And well Killer loves this warmth Nightmare gives off heh.
It's this illness which makes up the second half of the head cannon, and is what Jan’s fic is about, which you should all read!!
This story was also meant to be about how Nim wasn’t a good mother but lets focus on the illness for now, if you guys want a full Dream and Nightmare head cannon let me know!!
The idea behind this illness is that if a fire elemental gets cold, wet, or both for an extended period of time without warming up, it sends their body into a kind of shock.
Its very dangerous and in fact, Dream was lucky they recovered without being seen by a doctor.
Normally though the twins will be perfectly fine so long as they wrap up warm or limit being outside in the cold. Also wont do things like swimming for to long.
