Timber Timbre, Like A Mountain
Greetings from Michigan the Great Lake State, Sufjan Stevens 2004. Basically the most beautiful album of all time. Including the album artwork by Laura Normandin, now an editor over at MSL. I lived there as a kid and have this nostalgic but still vague sense of places he mentions. In my mind, MI is all planetariums, Autoworld and the silhouette of the GM plant. Steam trains. Suburban Christianity. Gigantic lakes, gigantic highways. The whole approach to the record so perfectly matches my now-adult understanding of the state; the songs really roollll along but are a bit cloying, a bit sinister.
It's this kind of week.
