I SAY: NO WAY FOLKS, NO WAY!
@marianadad2017 @artdesignunsw
Presenting my project definitely became a rushed experience. A big part of it all was time. I think ultimately the end result may have been different with more time. The experimentation definitely opened new ways of thinking for me, especially when compared to when I started out the project.
Some things I wanted to improve on?
I would have liked to shown different social interactions with Miss Boxhead, the shadow without the physical box. That would have left out the physical factor of the box, leaving a completely new transformation. I thought that it was interesting that many responses I got commented on the femininity of the box which wasn’t a huge focus when I was making it. However, I was glad many people saw the social commentary made on our wired thinking and maybe it was really a reflection of my own experience.
Assessment 1: The Box Final Work + 200 Word Statement...
Throughout my experimentation, I have been drawn towards the creation of structures by breaking the box down to its core component; cardboard. Specifically, my final work highlights this through my manipulation of cardboard into delicate cones of varying sizes, assembled together to create an intricate sculpture. Using PVA glue and outermost layers of the cardboard, I started by rolling cones, an idea which derived from my first experiment. In effort to push this idea forward, I decided to combine select ideas from experiment 3 and 4, using coloured lights and photography to finalise my experimentation. From 100 pictures of the structure, I narrowed it down to 8 which capture a sense of movement through its curvature and depth through its bold colour, transforming the lifeless cardboard box into a living organism.
Each of my 4 experiments were critical to my final work as they provided a point of reflection and analysis, allowing me to learn more about my capabilities as an artist. I have developed an understanding of photography, using it on a more professional level. This has instigated new possibilities for my art-making in the future through the use of photography as well as my newfound appreciation of experimentation.
Reflection?
Experimenting with my box became playing with the box, the shapes and the ideas. For the final, I think the focus became the conceptual ideas of the box. Each experiment opened me up to various ideas and the final persona was created. Each of the different experiments created the ideas for each section of the final -- creating the final Miss Boxhead! ; a manifestation of our preconceptions.

The concept of contrasting shapes is intriguing. The figure that was created resembled a figure with a box head?
