. Zigzag Traveller: JASPER TOWNSITE, Jasper National Park, Canada🇨🇦 (Park Administration building and old Firehall) . The Townsite of Jasper National Park, Jasper (pop. 5000) is about 370 km west of Edmonton and 290 km north of Banff. Established in 1813, Jasper House was a fur trade out outpost eventually part of the famous Hudson's Bay Company. The Park was set aside in 1907, and a Grand Trunk Pacific rail siding opened in 1911at this remote location then called Fitzhugh. Jasper is a tourist and commercial centre in a magnificent Rocky Mountain setting where you are likely to see deer, bear, elk and bighorn sheep. The Icefields Parkway connects Jasper to the larger and busier town of Banff, the townsite in Banff National Park. Zigzag Traveller: Floating Villages of HA LONG Bay Vietnam . Almost 2000 limestone islands dot Ha Long Bay in northeastern Vietnam populated by 1600 people living in four floating villages whose economy depends on fishing, cultivating marine species and an ever-increasing tourist industry. Ah, you say, tourism spoils everything but, in this case, living conditions have been dramatically improved by tourism, despite inevitable environmental damage cause by clearing mangroves and building wharfs to accommodate the popular tour boat industry. Named after John Longyear, founder of the Arctic Coal Co. in 1906, Longyearbyen is the world's most northerly settlement (over 1000). . On the west coast of Spitzbergen Is. in the Svalbard Archipelago halfway between continental Norway and the North Pole, LYB is an otherwordly place of mountains and glaciers, polar bears (dangerous), northern lights and hard-working, resilient folks. . Despite near destruction in WW2, recent fatal avalanches and the rigorous climate, LYB boasts a University Centre, a Global Seed Vault and a Satellite station.
