45 minutes trick
Study tip
So, I was having trouble with procrastinating my tasks, as usual, when someone told me a little advice that completely changed the way I view doing my assignments.
I was usually super scared of STARTING working on my assignments, nervous that I might not do enough in a given time span, or fail my test I was studying so hard for, so these thoughts paralyzed me and prevented me from even sitting on a desk without worrying too much.
Then, after I vented about all this, they told me to try one simple thing.
To try and study for 45 minutes. That's it. When thinking about how much time I have to study today, and of all the assignments, I should tell my self at the very start to just study for a short time period of 45 minutes.
Not so scary, right? Not at all.
But that’s the trick. By giving myself a time limit, I change the way I think about this activity. Rather than thinking it’s something scary and troublesome, I make it into something small and sweet, barely even the littlest task.
And it helps me actually start doing these assignments. Because after the 45 minutes, and a little break ofc, I am much more motivated to continue with the work and I end up studying way more than 45 minutes, which is just great.
This is a reminder for me, to help me remember this tip, but myb this helps someone else, so here you go :)
Good luck with your studies everyone!
Today I learned
My physics teacher told us today that helium was first discovered on Sun, more than a decade before it was detected on Earth.
Super interesting, but also, what?!
I just helped my friend with a genetics problem for her quiz, and I couldn't be happier to help someone with my knowledge of biology!
Hope I didn't mess it up lol that's the charm of midnight studying
I can't emphasise enough just how important it is to have a good communication with your teachers and professors.
Every now and then, many students get to this point: they can't finish their assignments on time and need just a few more days to do it perfectly, or want some help understanding the curriculum, or want extra credit for their work, or are simply very interested in the current topic they are studying about, and they need to talk with their teachers about it, but they may be to shy to do it.
But here's the deal: talking about your studies with your teachers helps A LOT.
Here are some tips when talking with your teachers and professors:
Be respectful. Be as respectful as you can be, and then, be even more respectful. The teachers appreciate that and it makes you stand out among your peers.
Wait till the end of the class to ask your questions. Teachers are often worrying about not being able to teach a class in time, and when students are asking too much questions during the class, it can be a bit irritating, even if teachers are trying really hard not to be irritated by you. If you ask questions after the class is over, you give off an impression that you can be patient and show that you care about learning so much that you will even sacrifice some of your time between classes.
In the conversation, always have in mind the fact just how teachers job can be stressful. So, when talking, speak slowly, and in a way thats easy to understand and leaves no questions behind. You don't want to seem under pressure yourself or rude, so try being as relaxed as you can be. Or pretend to be relaxed, both work.
Make a list of questions you need an answer to. This will help you feel organised and confident when talking, and you will leave happy knowing you asked everything you needed.
And lastly, be efficient and quick, and don't use all the time between the classes for your questions. I mean, even teachers use the time between classes to take a little break and recharge, and if you get a little bit too talkative, it may come out as rude.
Some pros of consulting your teacher:
Teachers will, in most cases, want to you do your best in their class. And since not many students show the extra interest in their classes, the students that do, stand out. Teachers will start viewing you in a different light after that. It will go from: "Oh, its that student that sits in the back of the classroom" to "Oh, its that student who showed interest in the curriculum". Being viewed as an aspiring straight A student makes teachers want to help you out even more.
If you don't understand some of the curriculum, teachers are more than willing to help. Trust me, they don't like giving students bad grades, so giving you some studying tips makes their job less stressful.
Teachers have much more experience and knowledge in their fields of work than you may realise, and if you are interested in their subjects, they can reccomend all sorts of books, movies and articles you may like.
They can connect you with people with the same interests as yours. Teachers may even have connections with the professors and students from your dream university, and can help you get in touch with them to find out all you want about the life there.
Teachers gossip, as all people do. But more importantly, they gossip about their student with the other teachers. So, when you stand out in their class, even other teachers may start treating you differently, maybe in a better way, if you present yourself as a student hungry for knowledge.
You got a bad grade and want to fix that? Tell your teachers. They love the students who try extra hard, and won't give up on you. They may allow you to retake the test, or if that's not possible, give you some extra curricular work to make your average grade look better.
This may be a little bit manipulative, but when you act friendly with the teacher, they can even decide to give you better grades than you possibly deserve. Acting friendly can be something small like telling them a funny joke about the curriculum (not a mean joke, mind you), cleaning the white board/dry erase board and being active in the class, especially when most of the students there are uncooperative.
Just to clarify, I understand that some teachers may not be as good and patient as I painted them to be. But, in my opinion, most of the teachers are just trying to be the best as they can at their work, which can be incredibly stressful. Having that in mind, sometimes teachers may not be as understandable as you would like them to be when you want to get some extra credit, but thats probbably not your fault. Its important that you tried to have that conversation.
And to point out here, if you menaged to talk to your professors when you were shy at first, thats a great accomplishment! Proud of you :)
Good luck with your studies everyone!
And remember, be kind to each other.
