took a brief respite from my little youtube boycott thing to watch the homestuck pilot and uhhh, here are my thoughts:
it was actually pretty good? like i think a lot of the elements were translated pretty well! my biggest issue was with the pacing.
like i get it's a pilot and all, but thinking back when i started reading homestuck, there was just this really pensive feeling i got from act 1. john playing the piano, going outside, stuff like that. john going outside was really poignant, but i feel like the pilot kinda just played it for comedy? or like i guess cinematic drama...thing...look i don't know the word for it but anyways—
that's not necessarily a bad thing, but if you're really going to try and capture the spirit of homestuck, i feel like you need to have those slower moments. like as absurd as homestuck can get, it's also a very contemplative work (at least as far as i've read), and you wouldn't be doing it justice by leaving those moments out.
and on top of that, i feel like the pacing reveals too much at once? like the trolls for instance. i love how your first impression is that they're simply internet trolls, but as you read further you begin to realize that they're actual, literal trolls.
there's something i find really clever about that, but with the pilot, you already know that from the start. and like...idk. there's just something about that that doesn't really strike the same chords with me.
regardless, i still think it's worth a watch, and i'd be down to watch more if it ever becomes a full series!
mostly because i n33d more nepeta...im almost done with a5a2 and im sad about nepeta :((
