I had never heard of Florine Stettheimer years ago when an ex-boyfriend excitedly invited me to see her first retrospective. I can't even remember which museam it was in. However, the charm and deceptively naive depiction of her small, exclusive social circle (she didn't like to go out) circle, reads like a who's who of the avante garde at the turn of the last century. Until the current retrospective at the @thejewishmuseum I had never seen this nude self-portrait.
