Why the Wall is Objectively Futile
I try and avoid getting political with posts. My disdain for the president is no secret, but I don’t like doing angry posts without a proper opinion beyond “he’s a racist, sexist, bigoted idiot”. So I’m going to try and explain, as objectively as I am able, why this wall Trump has spent so much of his time promoting, promising, and falling back on; is foolish and pointless. I want this to be as logic-based as possible.
*Let’s start with the big one. The wall Donald is proposing is HUGE. Actual size has varied, but let’s say 1000 miles, a length he himself has pushed for and might settle for. How long do you think it will take to build a 1000 mile wall? It’s not 3-5 weeks, not 3-5 months, probably not even 3-5 years. Trump will not be in office when this wall is being built. The man is 72 years old and president. He may not realistically be around in 3-5 years.
*Democrats and other opponents will continue to fight Trump’s wall. It’s not a small minority of radical liberals who are opposing this wall from social media, a large population of voters and politicians throughout the country and within the government itself are fighting this wall and will continue to fight this wall. The amount of time it’s taking to get the wall OK’d has already dragged on much longer than Trump wants. Even if he gets the funding, every step of the process will see opposition. Even if he fights and wins his way through each obstacle, it will take more time and the wall will take longer to complete.
*This wall will drain money as long as it’s going on. $5 billion is how much Trump wants. Realistically, nothing this ambitious ever stays under budget. It will cost more than he anticipated, meaning he’ll need more money. Meaning another step Democrats & others can and will fight him. Meaning more time, more money.
*The wall will require maintenance, this is just a fact. Any large construction requires upkeep, even without facing hostilities. More money, more time, more opposition, and therefore even more money, even more time. It’s not something that’s ever finished. If the wall was actually invulnerable it would still require upkeep. But it won’t be, so add a few more zeroes to the cumulative costs.
*What does the wall actually give us? An outdated form of defense that will crumble in the event of modern warfare. The technology for tearing down walls isn’t new, it’s centuries old. Meaning one does not even need modern weaponry to do some damage. Civil War cannonballs would do some damage. Same with a stick of dynamite. I’m not saying I expect us to be at war with Mexico any time soon, I’m saying people break shit because it’s there and it’s fun. A 1000 mile wall is like someone’s LEGO fort that’s been put on display; there’s always someone who wants to play rough with it.
There has got to be something better our president can be spending his time on. There just has to be. Because no matter which way you look at this wall, it’s just a burden.
