SC county Republican party leader dies from COVID-19

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) — A tea party Republican who recently helped turn over the party leadership in South Carolina's largest county has die

South Carolina Republican Pressley Stutts was an avid devotee of Donald Trump, insisting (falsely) that Trump won the 2020 presidential election. Stutts supported Trump so fervently that he led a successful movement to force Republicans who did not display sufficient support for Trump to resign. He proudly declared that he was "following Trump's wishes to kick anyone who didn't fully support the former president out of the Republican party."

Another way in which Stutts imitated Trump was his response to the coronavirus pandemic. Stutts insisted on calling it the "Wuhan virus"--thereby blaming China for the whole thing--downplayed it, spread conspiracy theories, and mocked precautions. For example, last September he made the following (false) post to Facebook:

"After over 6 months of dealing with the COVID-19 virus, here are the stats: In my state of SC, you have a 99.999% chance of not dying from the Wuhan virus. In the US, you have a 99.999% of not dying from the Wuhan virus. And worldwide, you have a 99.999% of not dying from the Wuhan virus. Can you say Plandemic? #ReopenSC #ReopenUS #Reopentheworld #Setpeoplefree!"

On June 13, 2021, Stutts posted vehement opposition to what he called the "'Get Vaccinated' agenda," promising to "push back against this ungodly initiative." And on July 4, he posted: "Delta variant is just code for 'too many of y'all aren't scared anymore.'"

Then he was hospitalized with COVID-19 himself.

Stutts insisted that he had never denied COVID was real. Even from his hospital bed, however, he continued to spread false conspiracy theories, calling the virus "a deadly bio-weapon perpetrated upon the people of the world by enemies foreign, and perhaps domestic."

COVID-19 didn't care. It killed him on August 19.
