a happy kiss.
"Are you sure?"Laura's heart started beating a lot faster once she heard Adelaide's words, hercheeks flushing a bit as she remembered the face of the person her best friendhad just mentioned. Sometimes, Laura convinced herself she was in love. Thistime, she was in love. Or, at least, that's what she told herself every time she got even a bit closer to Stephen Cornfoot. That was also the reason why Adelaide was so excited to tell Laura what she hadseen. "I'm completely, totally, one hundred percent sure! I saw him! And there's no way you'relosing this chance, Laura." What is worse than wanting something foryourself? Having your best friend wanting the same thing... for you. The Hufflepuffwas pretty sure she would be soon kicked out from the dormitory just so shecould check on Stephen and finally do what they had been plotting for days now."Okay, okay. I'm going, alright?" She sighed, despite not being ableto hide a smile; that would definitely be the day.
Twelve minutes later, LauraMadley was approaching the area near the forbidden forest. She was alsocarrying a purse with a small version of her guitar inside, just so it couldgive her luck. Not that she would need luck... some things were meant to be,right? That was one of those things! It had to be... it was. It definitely was. Therefore, she was expecting a lot - expecting him to be there in the firstplace, probably taking care of an animal or helping Hagrid with one of histhousands missions, and being happy to see her. Maybe she could even help, showhim that she knew something despiteonly being in her second year. Things would be terrible if he decided not topay attention to her only because she was younger... so she wouldn't let him(not pay attention).
What the Hufflepuff wasn'texpecting was the scene right in front of her eyes.
"Oh my." Shemuttered, her face in shock while her feet moved almost involuntarily; soon shewas running towards Stephen, who was crouched down beside a horse... a wingedhorse! One that was lying on the floor, seemingly hurt. She could see and heareverything, from the way he appeared to be squirming to the sounds the animalwould do, clearly in pain. "W-what happened in here?" Soon she hadforgotten it was Stephen and what she had planned to do, her voice tremblingnot because of nervousness but because she felt awful seeing it happen to thepoor creature. She wished there was a way she could help. No creature deservedto suffer so much, and Laura's heart broke a bit with that scene, as she kneeleddown to take a better look at 'who' she would later find out to be a Granian.
"That... that'sterrible!" The look of surprise in Laura's face would probably last long,as she shyly asked with her hands if she could caress the animal's body, asStephen seemed to be doing right now; she wasn't even so nervous anymore, focused on the fact that the Granian was in that much pain. And the reason whyshe said that out loud had not only to do with those facts, but also becausethe older boy explained that the horse was poisoned; probably by a creature whiletrying to defend herself. One minute went by and Laura finally spoke again, this time her voice trembling a bit. "She'll die?" Laura didn't wantthe poor creature to die; she was beautiful, majestic even, and it didn't soundright that an innocent horse would suffer so much.
"An antidote..."Finally, she repeated his words, or at least part of it; something that couldstop the poison, but which antidote to use? And maybe it was Laura's facilitywith potions, but she had an idea, one that made her stand up right away."I think... well, I know there'ssomething we can use. Mum said it's not 100% sure that it will work, but wecould try." She then proceeded to explain what she had in mind; a simplepotion that wouldn't act on the poison itself but on its consequences, makingthe horse immune. If they got it right. "Ok, I'll get it! By the way, I...I'm Laura." The hufflepuff bit her lips once he couldn't see her faceanymore, feeling the adrenaline take over as she ran towards the castle; maybethey could save the horse. Hagrid would know it better, but Stephen explainedthat he was thirty minutes late now for meeting him and probably wouldn't comeanymore.
-
Almost one hour. It tookLaura almost one hour to gather everything plus make the potion, and some moreminutes to get near Stephen again. This time she was sweating a bit - not somuch because it was a cold day -, her heart beating fast as she approached theolder boy and gave him the liquid she prepared. He didn't want to leave thehorse alone in its suffering, so it made sense that she would help with thepotion. "S-so... Do you think it'll do?" Now Laura couldn't even lookat him, all the shyness she was feeling before for being near him back again, and the Hufflepuff decided that it was best to focus on that horse. At leastuntil she got better, if it even happened. "Yeah, I hope so too. It'sawful that she has to go through this." And with that they decided it wastime to use it, the potion, I mean. Laura could do nothing but cross her ownfingers as she watched Stephen managing the liquid; part of her was tooenchanted and the other focused on the poor animal.
Finally, he said it...well, what he said was that they would wait. Wait. Together. With the horse. Soshe would get better. Together. Yeap, that was enough to make Laura's cheeksflushed, and the half-blood could only hope he wouldn't notice. "S-so,you're in your fifth year, right? I.. I see you sometimes, in the corridors andin the Great Hall." At least that wasn't so hard to admit; it made sense,as they studied at the same school, despite being a lot of students. "I'monly in my second." That was it, once again, frozen, totally incapable ofsaying something more. She hated it, not being able to say anything, but thistime Laura was way too affected with his presence to even fight her ownshyness.
Slowly, she recovered herconfidence. They started talking, and it was easy talking to him... she didn'timagine that, not at all. It took her just a few minutes to go back to beingthe normal, extroverted, sweet Laura, not the shy/mute one. All while takingcare of the horse, that slowly seemed to be less and less in pain... until shestopped complaining about it and finally made an attempt to stand up."We... We did it! She's okay again. I can't believe we did it." Andthat was it. One of those moments that Laura got too carried away by her ownemotions and simply forgot everything - for example, the fact that she onlytalked to him for a few minutes, and that they were basically strangers to eachother, despite him being her crush.
She kissed him. A simple, fast kiss, but still. An unrequited one, and maybe that was the reason why sherealised her own acts. So when she pulled away from him, she could almost hearher heart cracking itself. She felt stupid. Really stupid. "I... I'msorry. I didn't want to..." She tried, not really able to say anythingthat made much sense, and took a deep breath before standing up again."I... I have something to do, erm... C-can you take care of her?" Shepointed to the horse, whispering a thank you before turning to leave for good. She could sense that soon there'll be tears, but they would have to wait untilshe was safe and sound on her dormitory again.
