Not Happening| Daphne&Felipe

Daphne was getting more irritated by the second, which was the total opposite reaction that Felipe was hoping for. He still wasn’t surprised, but he was definitely disappointed. Talking to her was difficult, but he still appreciated the fact that they were having a conversation at all. He’d half expected her not to even answer him when he’d sat down here, and so this was a start. Not a great start, but a start all the same. “I’m sorry,” he said earnestly. “I know that betrothals like this are… often unfair, particularly to the woman. I apologize for misunderstanding your feelings, as well–that was not my intention. I shouldn’t have assumed. I would like for you to know, though, that I do not see you as only good for marrying and birthing the next generation. I would like to have a family with my wife, yes, but you are your own person. You are intelligent and capable and I appreciate that about you very much. I imagine that those words don’t mean much to you, but I wanted you to know regardless. I am aware that many people in our society feel that way about women, but I am not one of them.”
“I understand that you are being sarcastic, Daphne, but I actually greatly appreciate this insight.” Felipe wasn’t kidding–as far as getting to know her, he couldn’t really ask for anything more than her honesty. It was refreshing to know that she wasn’t hiding things from him, that she was letting him know exactly how she felt about this situation. After all, if they were to be married, he wanted her to be able to tell him exactly what was on her mind. “I want you to use your skills and your intelligence to the fullest. No wife of mine–whether that wife ends up being you or not–will be considered a second class citizen if I have anything to say about it. I believe that a marriage is a partnership between equals, not a dictatorship.”
The hard part of it all was that a part of her wanted to believe his words. He looked too bloody earnest to be deceiving her. But none of it made a difference for her. In a years time, she would be come his wife--and then that would be all anyone cared about. “No one is going to care how intelligent and capable I am when we’re married. Especially so soon after we graduate.” Daphne closed her eyes briefly, looking off to the side of the table, hoping to avoid his gaze.
“I had so many plans.” Her voice came out thready, cracking by the end of it. “Graduate and escape to asia to get my duelling mastery. Fight some competitions and thne get another mastery in runes.” She paused, blinking back tears that wanted to fall. It was a hard burden to bare seeing her dreams die before her eyes, “I was forge my own destiny and grab fate by its throat. Maybe get married after my reputation had been well established. But I can’t have that anymore...because my name is always...always going to have the rhetoric of just another poor pureblood girl married like cattle.” Daphne cleared her throat before gaining her composure. “I’m sure you mean well, Felipe...and I’m sure you mean every word you’re saying. I truly believe that. But words mean nothing.”
