THE POWER OF THE LOGO
In the first few weeks of our fragrance project, we were given a lecture on the power of the logo, both generally and in relation to our current projects. The logo is a key component of a brand as it signifies their brand essence and can either communicate effectively the aims or discourage the consumer due to inconsistency within the brand. To create our logo for our fragrance projects we would be collaborating with graphic design students. We were told to consider concept, consumer, values etc. in order to gain the best results regarding our short collaboration. It was pointed out that logos have connotations, you can analyse a logo how you would analyse a photograph through the signs and signifiers, therefore there should have been a large amount of consideration regarding even the smallest of details. The next point insisted that the logo was the identifiable signature and in turn, enabled instant recognition. This got me thinking, could I incorporate this to benefit my own personal work?
I contacted my friend Jordan Smith who is studying at UAL and is an amazing Illustrator to see if we could collaborate to create an illustration that would act as the signature of this blog. Due to the fact I aspire to progress into the editorial industry I believed that this was an initial opportunity to professionalise my blog and start to create recognition. The lecture reinforced that visibility, simplicity and colour were key factors in a successful logo. I knew from my initial idea that I would want to create a logo using the illustrated style to inject character and personality. Regarding the fact that I desperately wish to work in magazines we agreed that the inclusion of one would be appropriate in communicating this. To enforce the signature of the logo we decided that my ginger hair and the red lipstick I’m never seen without would be two recognisable features to highlight. The typography was initially more squared, it was then considered further to conform to the illustrated style of the logo, I now feel it contributes to the personality and am unbelievably happy with the outcome. I feel it represents me through the style of both character and illustration, through the props included and through the playful but simplistic detailing incorporated.
There was no doubt I was going to choose Jordan for this task. His work of both illustration and photo realism proves his undeniable talent and eye for detail. The artworks he creates are purely unique combining his interests of architectural and geographic shapes of the world partnered with an essence of fantasy. As well as these cityscapes he showcases a variety of style and technique within his work, my personal favourite being the Amy Winehouse and Alex Turner illustrations. I want to say another thank you to Jordan in creating my beloved logo, to witness his talent yourself you can see his work here.
