STYLISH STRANGERS CANVAS

This is my final canvas for stylish strangers. This is a brief I surprisingly really struggled with, I thought it would be quite easy but once you are out looking for people to take photo’s of it can be quite hard/daunting. I was turned down by a few people due to them being in a rush and not wanting to. I’m glad I finally got it done though and if I was to shoot this again I’d definitely just go for it and not be so scared - and not spend so much time on it! Most people were really lovely and up for it but once you get a few knock-backs it puts you down a bit. It was still a really fun task to do though!

These are my final pictures for stylish strangers. I really struggled with this brief, going up to strangers in the street was much more difficult than I imagined - not because I was told no by people, but rather my reluctance to ask them. Despite the difficulties, I managed to overcome my fears and get some good images. Im happy with what I have, specifically the details shots. My favourites are the first image, which shows a hint of a red strap, and the last image, showing the chest detail of a man. 

If I was to reshoot this project id definitely go into it with a whole lot more confidence, this would allow me to be more confident in asking strangers to pose a certain way. Furthermore, it would definitely give me more images to pay with.

Stylish Strangers

These are the images from my second attempt at this project. I found I had significantly more confidence and actually enjoyed taking the photos.

The first 2 of the images don't feel quite as engaging to me as the others. I did not direct the subjects to stand a further from the background resulting in no separation from the subject and the background. They are more dull when comparing to the other images. With the other images, I had more confidence and actually took my time and thought about what I was doing, and it think is shows through the quality of the image.

My Approach

This time around I decided to walk around and scout out backgrounds before taking the images. I scouted out the side streets around George Square as they had plenty of blank walls and shutters which would look good as backgrounds. This made things significantly easier as I knew where I could have subjects stand and knew where to be waiting to ask people for a photograph. This time around I was better at articulating myself and allowed myself time to get the shot I had in mind.

Image Selection

I am going to go for the last four images in the set above as my finals. The image of the woman in the red hat stands out a lot more from the rest of the images as the background is different from the stone backgrounds of the other three finals which may take away from the cohesion, but I still think as an individual image it is one of my strongest.

Stylish Strangers

These are the images taken from my first venture in this project. Initially, I found this daunting. On this day, I found I was being timid and not pushing myself out of my comfort zone enough, I was subconsciously choosing people sitting down because I would not have to give them much direction. However, this meant you cannot see their full outfit. I still think that images were successful; the subject stands out from the background, there is plenty of character and we can still see that these individuals have a distinct style.
