I was just thinking abt garnet and her stupid son (as one does on a friday afternoon) and how garnet’s always been very close to steven in a lot of ways bc they are both motivated by one thing at their core and it’s Love……I’ve always adored how garnet is written as a character bc she manages to have that whole “love overcomes all” thing while still contrasting steven very well, mostly because of her much more chill demeanor, she’s very deadpan comedically, and not as emotionally open considering she’s the Leader and is always trying to hold the team together…But like ultimately she is Made of Love. She has those giddy, silly and emotional moments…She never asks questions bc she is the answer and the answer is love. Peace and love on planet earth etc etc. I love her so much
I’ve also always loved how (in my interpretation at least) garnet seems to have been the closest with him when he was little. She IMMEDIATELY takes baby steven in “steven’s birthday” and does the silly face as if she’s done this before. And like that one comic when he’s so tiny and immediately runs to hug garnet I think about it SO often
And like i might be saying shit thats been said before I haven’t been in the fandom in years and am only just rlly doing analysis on it as an adult but. I love how you can see a lot of symbolic aspects in it too?? I think a lot abt in “three gems and a a baby” when all the gems make their own Theories as to what the fuck steven is and garnet immediately assumes he’s a fusion…that makes So much sense actually. And idk how i didn’t think about it sooner but i guess i only recently realized what fusion actually really symbolizes (again i havent been here in like 5 years i was 14 when suf ended). Like as a kid i thought it was just a funny misunderstanding of what kids are and how they’re made since rose was gone but. No!!!
it’s like— I mean garnet is a personification of a relationship quite literally. Thats what fusion IS…Again!! she’s made of love!!! Literally!!!! And,,, is that not also to some degree what a baby is too? i mean ofc thats a whole ass human who’s their own person, but like (and OBVIOUSLY NOT ALWAYS but in the IDEAL scenario and specifically with steven) a child is made From the love of their parent(s)… Just like garnet is made from the love between ruby and sapphire……..
I mean i can just imagine rose telling garnet that shes having a baby, and garnet struggling to understand it cuz she doesn’t know what a human baby is…But you know what she Does understand? Two people who love each other coming together to create something new. It’s the same way she said “it worked” when pearl talked abt greg and rose not “fusing”, bc fusion is ultimately abt connection between people who care about each other. Greg and rose loved each other just like ruby and sapphire did, and the two of them creating steven, to garnet, was the same thing as ruby and sapphire “creating” her via fusion.
To garnet steven is the same as her. He’s an entirely new person, born from the pure unwavering love between two people. no WONDER she assumed he was a fusion. it really says something abt how she talks about him in this episode….the fact that she assumes its fusion does give her the wrong idea that rose is still In There somehow, but shes the only one to call him by his name and corrects amethyst about it. she sees him as his own person and respects that. i think garnet understands why rose wanted to have him far more than amethyst or pearl do, because she empathized through her own experience……UFHHHGGHH they make me sick 😭😭😭😭
I'm listening the SU OST again and FUCK... I'll never let anyone convince this show isn't great.
The beautiful, delicate ways the SU team/Rebecca Sugar have written the characters relationships, personalities and stories still baffles me!! It was just kids show and still, it touched so many people regardless of age...
All that to say: The "Oh, Steven universe is cringe" thing is SO silly! Cringe culture is dumb and it should die. Live your life, enjoy the art that touched you!!!!!
Consider: The new Mewtwo movie retelling(?) is an AU where Team Rocket wins and they use this to tie into the Sun & Moon anime for a Rainbow Rocket arc
